Sunday, November 8, 2026, Real Madrid legend Marcelo has taken a sarcastic swipe at Valencia defender Pablo Maffeo following the controversial meeting between the two clubs at the Mestalla on Saturday night, according to a report by Madrid Universal.
Real Madrid delivered an impressive display to claim a 3-0 victory over Valencia, recording their eighth consecutive win in all competitions under manager Jose Mourinho. However, the comfortable scoreline did not prevent tensions from becoming part of the contest.
Maffeo was again at the centre of an incident involving Los Blancos. The Valencia defender appeared frustrated by some of the referee's decisions, especially the call that resulted in Madrid taking the lead. Marcelo, who enjoyed many successful years at the Santiago Bernabeu before departing, responded on social media.
In a post on X, the former Brazilian international mocked Maffeo and suggested that the defender seemed to have a particular dislike for Real Madrid. Marcelo wrote: "Maffeo really has it in for MADRID… my goodness."
He also jokingly altered the Valencia player's name to "Masfeo" and added the words "And a goal" as he celebrated Madrid's opening strike.
The controversy began when Maffeo was penalised for a challenge on Kylian Mbappe just outside Valencia's penalty area. The referee awarded Madrid a free-kick and showed the defender a yellow card. Mbappe took the resulting set-piece, but his effort hit the defensive wall. Fede Valverde was quickest to react to the loose ball and fired home the rebound, putting Mourinho's side ahead.
Maffeo was unhappy with the decision during a half-time interview with DAZN. He described the situation as "rubbish". He also questioned the referee's decision to award the free-kick that led to Madrid's first goal.
The decision became a major talking point because it directly preceded the goal, giving Maffeo challenge the officiating. Madrid, meanwhile, showed composure after taking the lead and continued to control the contest, eventually turning their advantage into a three-goal margin before the final whistle.
His frustration added to the atmosphere around the fixture, particularly because of his history of tense encounters with Real Madrid. During his previous spell at Mallorca, Maffeo was involved in several confrontations with the Spanish giants. Some of the most publicised incidents featured Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior, with the pair involved in heated exchanges during matches.
Although Maffeo had previously suggested that he and Vinicius had moved on from their disagreements, his latest clash with Madrid has renewed discussion. Marcelo's online reaction has added another layer to the story, as the former left-back appeared amused by his old team's performance and the defender's complaints.
Mourinho's priority will be the result. Madrid secured all three points with a convincing three-goal victory away from home, extending their winning run to eight matches across all competitions.
The result offers another indication of the confidence growing within the squad under Mourinho. Real Madrid will now look to maintain their momentum as they approach the November international break. Their recent performances have strengthened belief that they can remain competitive in the race for major honours this season, although tougher tests will follow.
