Why Cristiano Ronaldo might not play for Portugal again – Sister, Elma Aveiro

According to a report by Daily Post on Thursday, October 15, 2026, Cristiano Ronaldo’s international future with Portugal has been thrown into doubt after his sister, Elma Aveiro, suggested that the Al-Nassr forward may not return to the national team.

Her comments have triggered speculation about the 41-year-old striker’s international career amid reports of tensions involving Ronaldo and Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus. The development has raised questions about whether the legendary forward will continue representing his country.

The report claimed that Ronaldo was suspended by the Portuguese football federation following an alleged incident during the UEFA Nations League. The reported disagreement reportedly began after the forward became frustrated with the coach’s decision not to bring him on as a substitute during a match against Croatia.

Tensions allegedly escalated further when Ronaldo accused Jesus of “betrayal”, fuelling speculation that their relationship had deteriorated. However, the details surrounding the reported dispute have not been independently confirmed.

Reacting to the possibility of her brother returning to international football, Elma suggested that a comeback was unlikely, indicating that the situation remained unresolved.

“It’s more likely a NO than a YES. I think they’re both hurt. The situation has stalled,” she said.

She also hinted that restoring their relationship could be challenging following the alleged disagreement, stating, “When we’re betrayed, it’s very difficult to go back to normal.”

Her remarks have intensified speculation about Ronaldo’s future with Portugal, particularly considering his age and the influential role he has played in the country’s football history for almost two decades.

Ronaldo remains one of the most celebrated players ever to represent the Portuguese national team. Throughout his international career, he has established himself as one of its leading goalscorers and played a crucial role in Portugal’s achievements at major international tournaments.

His possible departure would mark a significant turning point for the national team as it considers its future without one of the most recognisable figures in its history.

However, Elma’s comments should not be interpreted as an official announcement that her brother is retiring from international football. Ronaldo himself has not been quoted in the report as confirming any intention to end his Portugal career.

Similarly, no definitive announcement from the Portuguese football federation confirming his departure from the national team was mentioned in the report.

For now, uncertainty remains over Ronaldo’s international future, with an official statement from the forward or the Portuguese football authorities needed to clarify whether he will represent his country again.
