Real Madrid Demand €80m From Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool And Three Other Premier League Clubs

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Real Madrid want Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur to contribute towards the expenses incurred during the failed European Super League project.

The Spanish club reportedly believes the six Premier League sides should pay their share of the initial costs after agreeing to participate in the controversial breakaway competition in April 2021.

According to The Athletic, the financial dispute could involve as much as €80 million, with Real Madrid seeking contributions from the English clubs despite their decision to withdraw from the project just days after its announcement.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus have reportedly been left to shoulder the promotional expenses associated with the proposed competition since the English clubs abandoned the initiative.

The European Super League proposal sparked widespread opposition from football supporters, governing bodies and political leaders across Europe. The backlash forced several founding clubs to withdraw, effectively bringing the project to a standstill.

Despite the collapse of the initiative, Real Madrid are reportedly unwilling to absorb all the financial costs associated with its development and are seeking contributions from the clubs that initially agreed to participate.

The disagreement centres on a shareholders’ agreement signed by the participating teams for the European Super League Company, a holding company based in Spain.

Whether Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham remain financially liable will depend on how the agreement is interpreted, particularly the wording concerning their commitment to "jointly own and manage" the project.

However, leaked documents reportedly contain no explicit clause requiring the clubs to share the costs, potentially weakening Real Madrid’s efforts to recover the money.

The lack of clear contractual provisions could prolong the dispute, with legal action remaining a possibility if the parties fail to reach an agreement through negotiations.

The development comes as Real Madrid continue to reorganise their business operations following the collapse of the Super League project.

The club are also preparing to appoint Bernd Reichart, the former chief executive of A22, the company that led the breakaway competition and later explored plans for the Unify League.
