Former Chelsea stars Didier Drogba and John Terry have joined other club legends in reacting to a birthday message shared by former director Marina Granovskaia for ex owner Roman Abramovich, who turned 60 on Saturday.
According to a report by The Athletic on Sunday, October 25, 2026, Granovskaia marked Abramovich’s birthday with a personal message reflecting on their long relationship and the memorable experiences they shared during his time at Chelsea.
Granovskaia worked closely with Abramovich for many years and played an important role in managing the club during his ownership. In her message, she noted that they had known each other for almost three decades.
She wrote: Wishing Roman a very happy birthday A special milestone this year, although I’d rather not mention the number it would only remind me that we’ve known each other for almost 30 years, which hardly seems possible.
“So many extraordinary memories along the way. Wishing him lots of happiness and many more wonderful moments to come.
Her tribute attracted attention from several former Chelsea players. Drogba shared the message, while Terry, David Luiz and Victor Moses responded with blue heart emojis to show their support.
Granovskaia was one of the most influential figures behind the scenes during Abramovich’s ownership. She began handling transfer negotiations and contract matters for him in 2010, joined Chelsea’s board in 2013 and became chief executive the following year.
Her time at the club coincided with a successful period in Chelsea’s history, as the team won major domestic and European trophies under Abramovich.
However, his 19 year ownership ended in 2022 after the UK government sanctioned him following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Chelsea was subsequently sold to a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.
During Abramovich’s tenure, Chelsea won five Premier League titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies, helping establish the club among Europe’s leading teams.
Granovskaia’s birthday message came after Chelsea suffered a 2-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. Although her post was a personal tribute, the reactions from Drogba, Terry and their former teammates showed that the relationships formed during Abramovich’s era remain significant to many associated with the club.
