According to a report by ESPN on Monday, October 26, 2026, Chelsea will travel to Anfield to face Liverpool in the EFL Cup fourth round on Wednesday, with manager Xabi Alonso hoping to guide his side back to winning ways following their disappointing Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.
A victory would restore confidence within the squad and move the Blues closer to winning silverware this season. Alonso could also make several changes to his starting lineup as Chelsea prepare for the important encounter.
Chelsea are expected to line up in a 3-4-2-1 formation against Liverpool.
Goalkeeper: Mike Penders
Defenders: Josh Acheampong, Maxence Lacroix, Levi Colwill
Midfielders: Pedro Neto, Moises Caicedo, Jordan Henderson, Marco Palestra
Attacking midfielders: Estevao Willian, Morgan Rogers
Striker: Danny Welbeck
Despite Chelsea’s disappointing result against Tottenham, Penders could retain his place in goal as Alonso looks to give the young goalkeeper another opportunity to prove himself.
Acheampong, Lacroix and Colwill are expected to form the three-man defence. The trio will need to remain organised and disciplined to limit Liverpool’s attacking threat and prevent the hosts from creating clear goalscoring opportunities.
In midfield, Neto could operate on the right flank, while Palestra is expected to occupy the left side and provide support during attacking moves. Caicedo and Henderson could partner in central midfield, where their energy, experience and ability to win possession will be crucial in helping Chelsea control the game.
Further forward, Estevao Willian could feature alongside Rogers in the two attacking positions behind the striker. Both players will be expected to use their creativity and movement to challenge Liverpool’s defence and create opportunities for their teammates.
Welbeck could lead the line as Chelsea’s lone striker, with his experience and movement potentially proving valuable in finding space, creating chances and converting opportunities supplied by the attacking players.
Chelsea will need to deliver a much-improved performance at Anfield if they are to progress to the next round. Alonso will hope his potential lineup can help the Blues respond positively to their defeat against Tottenham and secure an important victory.
