According to a report by Barca Universal on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Barcelona youngster Xavi Espart is reportedly expected to start at right-back against Real Madrid on Sunday after producing an impressive performance against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
According to AS journalist Javi Miguel, the 19-year-old academy graduate has earned the trust of manager Hansi Flick, while Jules Kounde remains doubtful to start because of an ankle injury.
Espart attracted attention during Barcelona’s clash with PSG, helping contain the threat posed by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia before scoring a goal to complete an outstanding individual display.
His performance has reportedly improved his chances of retaining the right-back position for El Clasico as Barcelona prepare for another challenging encounter against their historic rivals.
The teenager has emerged as one of Barcelona’s promising young talents this season. Flick had previously been impressed by his performances at left-back, where he has competed with established options Joao Cancelo and Alejandro Balde.
However, his display on the opposite flank against PSG further highlighted his versatility, defensive awareness and ability to contribute in attack when Barcelona need additional support going forward.
Against Real Madrid, Espart could face Yan Diomande, with Vinicius Junior unavailable due to suspension. Despite the different challenge, his performance against Kvaratskhelia has reportedly strengthened Flick’s confidence in his abilities.
Remarkably, Espart delivered his impressive display despite experiencing quadriceps discomfort before the match. He reportedly worked with a physiotherapist to manage the problem ahead of the European fixture.
The youngster also suffered a heavy knock to his ankle during the game, but reports suggest that neither issue is expected to prevent him from featuring against Real Madrid on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Kounde’s ankle sprain has opened the door for Espart to establish himself in Barcelona’s starting lineup for the crucial encounter at the Spotify Camp Nou.
Even if the French defender returns to the matchday squad, he is reportedly unlikely to start and could instead be restricted to a brief appearance off the bench.
Unless there are further changes, Barcelona could field the same defensive line that started against PSG, with Espart and Cancelo occupying the full-back positions while Pau Cubarsi partners Gerard Martin in central defence.
Beyond El Clasico, Espart’s growing confidence could influence Flick’s defensive selections, particularly if the teenager continues to impress against top-level opposition throughout the season.
