Manchester United youngster Shea Lacey is reportedly in contention to make his first Premier League start when the Red Devils welcome Aston Villa to Old Trafford on Sunday. According to the Evening Standard on Thursday, November 6, 2026, the 19-year-old winger could be rewarded for his impressive impact during United’s 3-2 Champions League comeback victory over Roma.
Lacey made his entrance as a second-half substitute against the Italian side, replacing Amad Diallo before making an immediate contribution. The academy graduate provided the assist for Matheus Cunha’s winning goal, helping United secure a crucial result in front of their home supporters.
The victory carried considerable importance for Michael Carrick’s team, as it ended their nine-match winless run across all competitions. The comeback also eased some of the pressure surrounding the manager, who had faced increasing scrutiny following United’s difficult run of results.
According to talkSPORT, Carrick is considering handing Lacey a starting position against Aston Villa as United attempt to build on the confidence gained from their European success. The teenager could replace Amad on the right wing, giving him an opportunity to demonstrate his attacking qualities from the beginning of a Premier League match.
Carrick has already spoken positively about the young forward, praising his ability and attitude after the Roma encounter. The United manager described him as a talented academy product who possesses the determination and mentality required to make progress at the highest level.
He also highlighted Lacey’s confidence and personality during matches. His willingness to take on opponents and produce unpredictable attacking moments has impressed the coaching staff, making him an interesting option as United consider changes to their forward line.
Despite attracting growing attention, Lacey has not yet established himself as a regular Premier League starter. All five of his appearances in the competition have come from the substitutes’ bench, including two outings during the current campaign. Sunday's potential selection would therefore represent a major development in his senior career.
However, the teenager has already experienced starting a competitive first-team match. In September, he was named in United’s starting lineup for their Carabao Cup third-round meeting with Brighton.
Lacey made the most of that opportunity by scoring the opening goal just eight minutes after the match began. Although United eventually lost and were eliminated from the competition, his performance demonstrated the attacking potential that has continued to attract attention.
His contribution against Roma has now strengthened the case for greater involvement. Providing the decisive assist in such an important European fixture offered another indication that he can make a difference when given opportunities.
A first Premier League start against Villa would be another significant milestone in his development. It would also give Carrick a chance to assess how effectively the youngster can handle the demands of a full league appearance.
United will be eager to secure consecutive victories and maintain the momentum generated by their comeback against Roma. If selected, Lacey could play an important role in that effort while taking another step towards establishing himself in Carrick’s first-team plans.
