Manchester City midfielder Enzo Fernandez has revealed his intention to return to Argentine club River Plate before eventually bringing his professional football career to an end.
According to a report by FootballTransfers on Friday, October 30, 2026, the Argentine international remains committed to rejoining his boyhood club despite recently completing a move to the Etihad Stadium.
Fernandez joined Manchester City from Chelsea on Deadline Day during the summer transfer window in a deal reportedly worth €145 million, making him the most expensive signing in Premier League history.
Despite his new chapter in English football, the midfielder has maintained his ambition to return to Argentina, where he spent 15 years at River Plate before moving to Benfica in 2022.
The 25-year-old made 53 senior appearances for River Plate before beginning his European adventure. Although his current contract with Manchester City runs until 2031, he has already expressed confidence that he will eventually return to his former club.
Speaking during an appearance on the Argentine programme Los Edul, Fernandez said:
"I want to return to River at some point, I've said it several times. I'm going to return, I'm sure of it. It's something I really want. I stand by my words and what's on record."
He further explained that his desire to return to River Plate comes from his ambition to win more trophies and spend additional years enjoying life at the club.
"If I say it, it's because I feel it and because I know I need to return to win things and enjoy the River Plate world for many more years than I did," he added.
However, Fernandez acknowledged that his immediate future remains at Manchester City, considering the length of his current contract.
"Today, I'm here with a long contract at Manchester City. There's still a long way to go, but it will happen," he stated.
The Argentine midfielder is among three major midfield signings Manchester City completed during the summer, alongside Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi.
Since arriving at the Etihad Stadium on September 1, Fernandez has scored one goal in 10 appearances for the club.
Nevertheless, an immediate departure next year is considered unlikely, as the midfielder is expected to remain an important part of Manchester City's plans for the foreseeable future.
