Romeo Lavia is emerging as one of Chelsea’s most encouraging success stories this season after gradually overcoming the injury problems that previously disrupted his progress. According to Football London on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the Belgian midfielder has become increasingly available under manager Xabi Alonso, while his performances have also demonstrated the qualities that made Chelsea invest heavily in him.
The 22-year-old has endured several frustrating fitness setbacks since arriving at Stamford Bridge, but his recent appearances suggest that he is finally enjoying a more consistent period. His performance against Manchester United last Saturday marked the second consecutive occasion on which he completed the entire 90 minutes, an important development given his previous difficulties maintaining fitness.
Beyond simply staying available, Lavia has begun showing greater confidence and authority in midfield. His display against United was reportedly among his strongest since joining Chelsea, with his growing influence suggesting that he is becoming more comfortable within Alonso’s system.
His progress reflects the determination he has maintained despite repeated interruptions to his career. Rather than allowing those setbacks to undermine his ambitions, the midfielder has continued working behind the scenes to establish himself as a dependable member of the squad.
Chelsea paid Southampton approximately £58 million to sign Lavia in the summer of 2023, but his first campaign in London proved extremely disappointing from an availability perspective. He managed only one appearance throughout the 2023/24 season, leaving the club unable to benefit fully from its substantial investment.
His second season brought noticeable improvement, as he featured in 22 matches across all competitions. He also contributed to Chelsea’s Club World Cup triumph, although opportunities to establish himself as a regular starter remained limited.
Unfortunately, another series of injuries affected his progress during the following campaign. Lavia managed only four Premier League starts, continuing a frustrating pattern that prevented him from building momentum and securing a consistent place in the team.
The current season, however, has brought encouraging signs. During the 2026/27 campaign, he has already accumulated 372 Premier League minutes across seven appearances, starting five matches. That represents a significant improvement on his limited involvement last season and suggests that his fitness is moving in the right direction.
His increasing availability could become particularly important ahead of Chelsea’s upcoming league fixture against Sunderland. Concerns have emerged over Moisés Caicedo, who reportedly missed Wednesday’s training session as the squad prepared for Sunday’s encounter at the Stadium of Light.
Caicedo’s situation makes Lavia’s fitness especially significant. If the Ecuadorian midfielder is unavailable, Alonso could depend more heavily on the Belgian to provide balance, defensive protection and control in the middle of the pitch.
Chelsea would face a difficult selection problem if both players were ruled out. The pair are important options in midfield, and losing them simultaneously would leave Alonso with fewer established choices for a demanding Premier League fixture.
For Lavia, the opportunity could represent another chance to demonstrate his importance after several seasons disrupted by injuries. Maintaining his current fitness and performance levels would help him build the consistency that has previously proved difficult to achieve.
His recent progress is therefore encouraging for both the player and Chelsea, particularly as the club look for greater reliability from their midfield options.
