Chelsea are reportedly considering a substantial offer for Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez as manager Xabi Alonso explores ways to strengthen his squad, although Paris Saint-Germain could emerge as a major rival for the Spanish international.
According to a report by The Athletic published on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Chelsea are assessing the possibility of making a “massive” bid for the 23-year-old, while PSG are also said to be preparing a significant offer for the attacking midfielder, according to The Daily Briefing.
The London club have admired Lopez for some time and were reportedly close to securing his services in 2025 before he ultimately remained at Barcelona. Their renewed interest suggests that Chelsea continue to view him as a potential addition capable of improving their attacking options in midfield.
Lopez has made an encouraging start to the 2026/27 season, scoring four goals in nine La Liga appearances. His ability to contribute in front of goal, create opportunities and operate in different midfield roles has strengthened his appeal as clubs consider their recruitment plans for the upcoming transfer windows.
The Spain international missed out on his country's World Cup-winning campaign during the summer because of an injury. However, his performances this season indicate that he has returned to form and remains a valuable member of Barcelona’s squad.
Chelsea’s interest comes as the club continues to identify midfield reinforcements for Alonso. Lopez could provide additional creativity and attacking threat, although any potential deal may prove difficult if Barcelona are reluctant to part with a player who has demonstrated his importance to the team.
Meanwhile, Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott remains another significant target for Chelsea ahead of the January transfer window. The England international has reportedly become a priority for the Blues, but securing his signature could require a considerable financial commitment.
Reports suggest Bournemouth could demand a fee of approximately £100 million for Scott, reflecting his importance to the team and the interest he has attracted. Liverpool are also reportedly monitoring the midfielder, potentially creating further competition if Bournemouth become willing to negotiate a transfer.
Chelsea’s pursuit of Scott could also influence their wider recruitment strategy. Bournemouth are understood to have identified Boca Juniors prospect Tomas Aranda as a possible replacement should the English midfielder leave.
The 19-year-old Argentine has attracted attention through his performances in South America and is reportedly available for a release clause of around £18.75 million. Such a fee could make him a comparatively affordable option for Bournemouth if they need to replace Scott.
However, Aranda is also believed to be on Chelsea’s radar. The Blues’ interest in the young midfielder means Bournemouth’s potential move could create an additional complication in their recruitment plans, particularly if both clubs decide to pursue him.
Chelsea must therefore assess their priorities carefully as they consider the best way to improve Alonso’s squad. With several targets potentially requiring substantial investment, the club will need to balance immediate needs against its longer-term plans.
Although Scott remains a leading option, Lopez could provide an alternative route to strengthening the attacking midfield department. Competition from PSG and Barcelona’s position on the player are likely to influence whether Chelsea proceed with a formal offer.
