Amad, Cunha and Mbeumo all hit the surf celebration, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside

Manchester United endured another frustrating afternoon at Stamford Bridge after Matheus Cunha’s goal celebration was interrupted by a VAR intervention during their 2-0 Premier League defeat to Chelsea, according to a report by ESPN UK on Saturday, October 31, 2026.

Cunha believed he had given United the lead when he scored from close range and immediately celebrated alongside teammates Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo. However, their excitement quickly turned to disappointment after the Video Assistant Referee reviewed the incident and determined that the Brazilian forward had been offside.

The disallowed goal was a significant setback for Michael Carrick’s side, who had started the match with attacking intent but struggled to turn their promising opportunities into a breakthrough.

The incident followed a corner kick in which Harry Maguire won the initial aerial challenge. The ball subsequently reached Cunha, who finished from close range. A VAR review, however, established that he was in an offside position when the ball came back towards him, leaving the referee with no option but to rule out the effort.

United continued to threaten before the interval, with Amad causing problems for Chelsea’s defence and Mbeumo contributing to several attacking moves. Nevertheless, their finishing let them down, and neither side managed to score during the first half.

Chelsea emerged from the break with greater purpose and found the breakthrough five minutes into the second period. Morgan Rogers produced an impressive individual move, penetrating United’s defensive line before lifting the ball over goalkeeper Senne Lammens to make it 1-0.

The goal changed the direction of the contest and increased the pressure on United. Their situation became more difficult when Lisandro Martinez was sent off after receiving a second yellow card following a VAR review of an incident involving Wesley Fofana.

The dismissal left Carrick’s team with 10 players and also resulted in a penalty for Chelsea. Cole Palmer stepped forward and converted confidently, extending the hosts’ advantage to 2-0. The goal was also a personal milestone for the England international, taking his Premier League tally for Chelsea to 50.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, United continued looking for a way back into the match. Mbeumo came close to scoring during stoppage time with a powerful effort from distance, but the ball struck the crossbar after goalkeeper Mike Penders got a touch.

Chelsea also had a goal from Estevão Willian ruled out for offside, although the decision did not affect the outcome as the hosts maintained their two-goal advantage until the final whistle.

The victory ended Chelsea’s difficult spell following defeats in the Premier League and Carabao Cup. United, meanwhile, faced renewed scrutiny over their performances under Carrick.

Reuters reported that the result extended Manchester United’s winless sequence across all competitions to nine matches. Their continued difficulty converting chances into goals has intensified questions about the team’s form and added pressure surrounding Carrick’s position.
