According to a report by Evening Standard on Friday, October 23, 2026, Arsenal summer signing James Scanlon could be given the chance to make his senior debut after Bukayo Saka suffered an injury ahead of the Gunners’ Premier League meeting with Everton.
Saka was substituted after just 10 minutes during Arsenal’s 2-2 Champions League draw against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night after experiencing pain in his left leg.
The England international went down without any significant contact from an opponent and immediately signalled to the bench for a substitution, raising concerns about his fitness.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta later confirmed that the winger had suffered a quadriceps problem, with a scan scheduled to establish the extent of the injury.
“We lost Bukayo, who actually was having a great game,” Arteta said. “They are a bit concerned. A player that has to come off with a really sharp pain is never good news, but we have to wait and see.”
Saka’s possible absence could force Arteta to adjust his attacking options when Arsenal host Everton on Saturday.
Noni Madueke is expected to be a leading contender to start on the right wing after replacing Saka against Bayern Munich, while Eberechi Eze could feature on the opposite flank following an improved performance.
However, with Christos Tzolis also reportedly doubtful because of a hamstring problem, Arsenal could have an opportunity to bring another attacking player into their matchday squad.
This situation could create an opening for Scanlon, who joined Arsenal from Manchester United during the summer transfer window.
The 20-year-old has trained with Arteta’s first team several times this season and impressed with his performances for the club’s Under-21 side.
Scanlon has scored three goals in four Premier League 2 appearances, strengthening his chances of attracting attention from the senior coaching staff.
The Gibraltar international has also made 28 senior appearances for his country but is yet to make his first-team debut for Arsenal.
Unlike in the Champions League, where he is ineligible because he was not included on the club’s A List and does not qualify for the B List, Scanlon is eligible to play in the Premier League.
However, his potential involvement will depend on Arteta’s final selection decisions, particularly as Arsenal’s Under-21 team is also scheduled to play on Saturday.
Speaking after joining the Gunners, Scanlon expressed his excitement about the opportunity to develop at the club.
“I like to score goals, assist, so hopefully I can excite players who watch me,” he said. “I’m looking forward to playing, representing the badge, improving and hopefully showing people what I can do.”
With Saka’s fitness still uncertain, Scanlon could be considered for a place in Arsenal’s senior squad as Arteta prepares his team for Everton’s visit. However, neither his inclusion in the squad nor a potential senior debut has been confirmed.
