According to a report by Metro on Sunday, November 8, 2026, former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has praised Martin Odegaard for his outstanding performances this season, describing the Gunners' captain as "like a new signing" following their narrow victory over Hull City.
Merson believes Odegaard has played a crucial role in Arsenal's impressive start to the 2026/27 campaign.
Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over newly promoted Hull City at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, with Odegaard scoring the decisive goal in the 72nd minute.
Mikel Arteta's side struggled to break down Hull's well-organised defence, with Declan Rice coming close to scoring on three occasions. Noni Madueke also created several opportunities but was repeatedly denied by goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis.
However, Hull's resistance was eventually broken when Tzolakis parried Madueke's effort, allowing Odegaard to react quickest and score from the rebound.
The victory moved Arsenal six points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table after the defending champions suffered a 3-1 defeat against Nottingham Forest.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson acknowledged Hull's defensive organisation but insisted that Odegaard's contribution made the difference.
"Hull defended very well and it took Martin Odegaard to break them down if I'm being honest," he said.
The former England international also identified the Norwegian as Arsenal's most influential player during the encounter, highlighting his ability to move the ball quickly and create opportunities.
"He’s been outstanding. He’s the only one really that moves it quickly," Merson added.
He further praised the midfielder's overall contribution, saying: "I think he’s been outstanding this season, he’s like a new signing for them and he’s been the man so far."
Odegaard's goal against Hull took his tally to five in all competitions this season, a significant improvement on the single goal he scored in 36 appearances last term.
Merson also admitted Arsenal were not at their best but stressed the importance of securing victories in difficult matches during a title challenge.
Arsenal will now turn their attention to Newcastle United, whom they face at St James' Park next weekend, before a Champions League meeting with Borussia Dortmund and a Premier League clash against Manchester City.
Odegaard's improved form is providing Arteta with an important attacking influence as Arsenal continue their pursuit of another Premier League title.
