According to a report by BBC Sport on Sunday, October 18, 2026, Chelsea moved to the top of the Women’s Super League table after securing an emphatic 6-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.
Lauren James and Ellie Carpenter both scored twice, while Sjoeke Nüsken and Maika Hamano also found the net as Chelsea recorded their fifth consecutive league win. Tottenham scored through Matilda Vinberg and Signe Gaupset, but the visitors struggled to contain Chelsea’s attacking threat, particularly in the second half.
James gave Chelsea the lead in the 25th minute after capitalising on a defensive mistake by Toko Koga outside Tottenham’s penalty area. The forward regained possession, drove towards goal and finished from a difficult angle to put the hosts ahead.
Tottenham responded in the 41st minute when Julie Blakstad delivered a cross into the box, allowing Vinberg to score with a header at the far post and bring the visitors level before half-time.
Chelsea regained the advantage in the 58th minute through Carpenter, who finished a low cross from Alyssa Thompson after the winger made an impressive run into the penalty area.
James extended the hosts’ lead four minutes later. Receiving a pass from Lucy Bronze, the England international produced a superb curling finish into the far corner to score her second goal of the match.
Chelsea continued to dominate, with substitute Nüsken making an immediate impact in the 67th minute by firing a powerful effort into the net to make it 4-1.
Hamano added a fifth goal in the 86th minute with a spectacular long-range strike from approximately 30 yards, further underlining Chelsea’s attacking quality.
Tottenham responded a minute later when Gaupset won possession near the edge of Chelsea’s penalty area before beating the goalkeeper with a shot towards the near post.
However, Carpenter completed her brace in stoppage time, scoring in the 90th minute plus one after receiving an assist from Keira Walsh to seal the 6-2 victory.
The result extended Chelsea’s winning streak to five league matches and lifted them to the top of the Women’s Super League standings, strengthening their position in the title race.
