Ferdinand, Bruno Fernandes, Dalot React as Ronaldo Ends 23 Year Portugal Career

According to a report by Daily Post on Thursday, November 5, 2026, several prominent football figures and clubs, including Bruno Fernandes, Vinicius Junior, Diogo Dalot and Manchester United, have paid tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo following his announcement that he is retiring from international football.

The 41 year old Portuguese forward confirmed his decision in a five-minute video shared across his social media platforms on Thursday, bringing his 23 year career with the national team to an end.

Ronaldo's announcement sparked emotional reactions from supporters, former teammates and clubs, with many recognising his extraordinary achievements and lasting influence on the game.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, who played alongside Ronaldo at Old Trafford, was among the first to respond. Ferdinand praised the forward's remarkable journey, describing his career as something resembling a movie.

Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior also joined the tributes, referring to Ronaldo as the number one. The Brazilian currently wears the number seven shirt at the Spanish club, a jersey that became synonymous with the Portuguese star during his successful spell at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Manchester United, where Ronaldo enjoyed two separate spells, also celebrated his contribution to Portugal and acknowledged his achievements with the national team.

His Portuguese teammate Diogo Dalot expressed gratitude for the influence Ronaldo had on the squad, highlighting how the veteran forward encouraged his teammates to believe in themselves and pursue success.

Bruno Fernandes, another Manchester United midfielder, described sharing the national team dressing room with Ronaldo as a special privilege. He recalled growing up admiring the former Real Madrid star and said he was grateful to have shared important moments with his childhood idol.

Sporting CP, where Ronaldo began his professional career before joining Manchester United in 2003, also paid tribute to him for his contribution to Portuguese football.

Ronaldo finishes his international career with 234 appearances and 146 goals, making him the most-capped player and leading goalscorer in men's international football history.

His major honours with Portugal include the 2016 European Championship and UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025. His retirement closes an extraordinary chapter that established him as one of the greatest players in the country's football history.
