Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino has disclosed that a powerful shot from Lionel Messi hit him directly in the face during the World Cup final, temporarily causing him to lose sight in one eye for the remainder of the game.
According to a report by BBC Sport on Friday, October 16, 2026, the Spanish international recounted the painful experience while reflecting on what it was like to face the Argentine superstar on football’s biggest stage.
Merino explained that Messi had an opportunity to shoot from outside the penalty area, forcing him to move forward quickly in an attempt to block the effort and help protect Spain’s lead.
Aware of the threat Messi posed, the Arsenal midfielder was determined to stop him from getting a clear shot on goal. However, with only about one metre separating them, Merino had very little time to react when the Argentine unleashed his effort.
In an article written for The Players’ Tribune, Merino described what went through his mind as he rushed to challenge the legendary forward.
“No, not him,” he recalled thinking before attempting to block the shot.
Unfortunately, the ball struck him squarely in the face, knocking him to the ground and seriously affecting his vision. Despite the painful impact, Merino refused to leave the pitch and continued playing until the final whistle.
“I got hit so hard that I was actually blind in one eye for the rest of the match,” Merino revealed.
Despite the injury, the midfielder remained determined to support his teammates during the crucial encounter. Spain eventually secured victory, allowing him to celebrate a historic achievement alongside the rest of the squad.
According to his account, Merino’s vision later returned to normal, and the temporary loss of sight did not cause any lasting complications.
His revelation provides a glimpse into the physical challenges and sacrifices players sometimes endure while competing at the highest level of international football. It also demonstrates Merino’s determination to keep fighting for his team despite suffering a painful injury during one of the most significant matches of his career.
