Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has come under fire from Como supporters following his side’s 3-2 Champions League defeat to Feyenoord, with sections of the Italian club’s fanbase questioning his performance and calling for a change between the posts.
According to Football London on Thursday, October 15, 2026, the Spanish goalkeeper faced strong criticism after Como conceded three goals against the Dutch side on Wednesday night. The defeat has intensified scrutiny of Sanchez as he attempts to establish himself under manager Cesc Fabregas after leaving Chelsea on loan.
Sanchez joined Como with an option to make the transfer permanent after losing his place in Chelsea’s starting line-up under Xabi Alonso. His move to Italy offered an opportunity to secure regular playing time and rebuild his reputation following criticism of his performances in England.
The goalkeeper had initially appeared likely to continue as Chelsea’s first choice, but that position changed after he made two mistakes during the club’s opening Premier League fixture against Fulham. Emi Martinez subsequently replaced him in the starting XI, leaving Sanchez to seek opportunities elsewhere.
At Como, however, the Spaniard has not been guaranteed a regular starting role. He is competing with Jean Butez for the goalkeeper position, making consistency particularly important as he attempts to convince Fabregas that he deserves to remain the preferred option.
Como’s meeting with Feyenoord provided another difficult evening for Sanchez. The Italian side initially took the lead, raising hopes of securing a positive result in the European fixture, but Feyenoord responded with three goals to complete a comeback victory.
Sanchez was unable to prevent Gjivai Zechiel from scoring the equaliser as the visitors restored parity. Feyenoord then moved ahead through Anis Hadji Moussa, whose low effort at the near post beat the Como goalkeeper.
The third goal proved especially unfortunate for Sanchez. Hadji Moussa attempted a long-range effort that deflected off Jacobo Ramon before striking the post and rebounding off the goalkeeper into the net. The sequence left Sanchez with little opportunity to react, and the final goal was widely described in the report as an unfortunate incident.
Despite the element of bad luck surrounding that strike, Como supporters remained dissatisfied with the goalkeeper’s overall display. Reactions on social media included harsh assessments of his performance, with one fan describing it as disastrous and another expressing a particularly negative opinion of his ability.
Some supporters also questioned Fabregas’ decision to bring Sanchez to the club, arguing that Butez should be restored to the starting position. Their comments reflect growing frustration following the defeat, although there has been no confirmation that the manager intends to change his goalkeeper.
The criticism places Sanchez under additional pressure at a time when he needs consistent performances to secure his place in the team. His competition with Butez means that further mistakes or disappointing displays could affect his chances of becoming Como’s established first-choice goalkeeper.
The situation also has implications for Chelsea, who could benefit from a permanent transfer if Como decide to activate the purchase option included in the loan agreement. Sanchez’s performances in Italy will therefore be relevant not only to his immediate prospects but also to decisions about his longer-term future.
However, the defeat against Feyenoord does not establish whether Como will proceed with a permanent deal. That decision will depend on the club’s assessment of Sanchez’s performances and its plans for the position. For now, the goalkeeper faces the task of responding to the criticism and competing for regular football under Fabregas.
