According to a report by GOAL on Sunday, October 25, 2026, Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer is expected to avoid missing a Premier League match following his red card in the Blues’ 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, as his one-match suspension is set to be served during the EFL Cup instead.
The England international received the first red card of his professional career during Chelsea’s disappointing London derby against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 24. The defeat dealt another setback to Chelsea as they struggled against their London rivals.
However, Chelsea’s upcoming EFL Cup fourth-round clash with Liverpool means Palmer is expected to serve his suspension in the competition on Wednesday, allowing him to remain available for the club’s next Premier League fixture.
Palmer was dismissed after receiving two yellow cards during the encounter. The midfielder had initially been booked for dissent in the 71st minute before picking up his second caution in the 80th minute for a challenge on former Chelsea player Conor Gallagher.
His dismissal forced Chelsea to finish the match with ten men and added to the difficulties facing manager Xabi Alonso. The defeat also marked Alonso’s first home loss since taking charge of the Blues.
Chelsea had hoped to deliver a strong performance in front of their supporters, but Tottenham’s 2-0 victory left the manager facing questions about his team’s display and disciplinary record.
Despite the disappointment, Palmer’s suspension is not expected to disrupt Chelsea’s immediate Premier League plans. Under domestic football suspension rules, a ban resulting from a red card can be served in an eligible domestic cup competition, depending on the circumstances.
This differs from yellow-card accumulation rules, under which Premier League bookings generally do not carry over into the EFL Cup or FA Cup.
Chelsea’s upcoming meeting with Liverpool therefore provides an opportunity for Palmer to complete his suspension without missing a league fixture.
The development will come as a relief to Alonso, who will want his influential attacking midfielder available when Chelsea return to Premier League action. Palmer plays an important role in creating chances, unlocking opposition defences and contributing to the team’s attacking threat.
Nevertheless, his dismissal remains an unwelcome setback, particularly as Chelsea seek greater consistency and discipline throughout the campaign.
Palmer’s expected absence against Liverpool will require Alonso to consider alternative attacking options for the cup encounter. The manager will also be eager to ensure that disciplinary issues do not continue to affect his team’s performances.
For Palmer, the incident represents a frustrating moment in his Chelsea career. The midfielder will be expected to learn from the experience and exercise greater caution in future matches.
Chelsea will now focus on their EFL Cup meeting with Liverpool before turning their attention to their Premier League clash against Manchester United on October 31.
