€122m star reaches decision on January move to Chelsea

Barcelona midfielder Gavi is expected to stay at Camp Nou beyond the January transfer window, despite reported interest from Chelsea and several other Premier League clubs. A FootballTransfers report published on Friday, November 6, 2026, says his representative, Ivan de la Peña, has rejected speculation about a departure and insists the Spain international remains committed to the Catalan club.

The 22-year-old has struggled to establish himself as a regular member of Hansi Flick’s side this season. He has played only 211 minutes from a possible 1,350 across all competitions, while also being an unused substitute in five La Liga fixtures. The lack of opportunities has prompted questions about his role and encouraged clubs elsewhere in Europe to monitor developments.

Bayern Munich and Napoli are among the sides reportedly tracking Gavi, alongside several unnamed Premier League teams. Chelsea and Manchester United have both been linked with the midfielder for more than a year, and his reduced involvement has kept the possibility of a future move in the discussion.

For now, however, Barcelona are determined to retain the academy graduate at least until the end of the current campaign. De la Peña’s reported position also suggests that Gavi is not seeking an immediate change of club, despite the uncertainty created by his limited minutes.

Competition in Barcelona’s midfield has become more demanding. Marc Bernal’s emergence has added another option from the club’s academy, while the reported arrival of Rodri from Manchester City has further increased the depth in the position. Frenkie de Jong’s return to full fitness has also strengthened the choices available to Flick, making regular selection more difficult for Gavi.

The midfielder’s injury record is another factor in the situation. Recurring fitness problems in recent years have disrupted his progress and reportedly affected his market valuation. His Estimated Transfer Value has fallen sharply, from €122 million in 2024 to €31.5 million, a significant decline that reflects the challenges surrounding his recent availability and playing time.

Chelsea could be disappointed by the latest indication that Gavi intends to remain in Spain. Manager Xabi Alonso may have viewed the technically gifted midfielder as a useful addition while considering ways to improve his options in the centre of the pitch. His availability, however, now appears unlikely to provide Chelsea with a straightforward January opportunity.

The London club are instead reportedly expected to prioritise a move for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott during the winter window.

Manchester United are also said to be looking at other positions after recruiting Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans in the summer.

With the January window approaching, Barcelona’s stance and the player’s reported commitment point towards continuity rather than a mid-season transfer. Chelsea may therefore need to assess alternative targets if Alonso wants another midfielder, while Gavi focuses on earning more opportunities under Flick. Interest from abroad may persist, but a move before the end of the season currently appears unlikely.
