Manchester City Set for Relegation to the Championship

According to a report by the London Evening Standard on Monday, October 19, 2026, Manchester City could face a significant points deduction after being found guilty of most of the 115 financial charges brought against them by the Premier League.

The club could receive a heavy fine and a substantial points deduction, according to Daily Mail chief sports writer Oliver Holt. Such a punishment could put City’s Premier League status at risk, although the final sanctions have not been confirmed.

An independent commission found City guilty of most of the charges relating to alleged financial breaches. However, the club has appealed the verdict, leaving uncertainty over when the case will be resolved and what punishment they could face.

Holt suggested that the Premier League wants the sanctions to be announced before the appeal process is completed. However, a final decision on the appeal is not expected before the end of January.

City could also face a further points deduction next season, potentially affecting their chances of returning to the top flight if they are relegated. However, an immediate expulsion from the Premier League or a drop to League Two is considered less likely because of the major disruption such decisions could cause to English football.

Under manager Enzo Maresca, City have made an impressive start to the campaign, winning their first seven matches. Nevertheless, any significant punishment could damage their title hopes and dramatically change the Premier League standings.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have strengthened their position in the title race following a 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest. The result left them in second place, three points behind City.

Holt also argued that Arsenal’s defeat to Forest should be viewed in perspective, pointing out that even the strongest teams can struggle in important matches.

With City's appeal still ongoing, the club's future remains uncertain. Any confirmed punishment could have a major impact on the title race, while potentially improving Arsenal's chances of challenging for the Premier League crown.
