Huge Boost for Alonso as Key Star Returns Ahead of Manchester United Clash

According to a report by the London Evening Standard on Friday, October 30, 2026, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has received a positive update regarding the availability of one of his key players ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are preparing for an important home fixture as they look to recover from a disappointing run of results. Chelsea have suffered consecutive defeats, with their latest setback coming against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, where they were eliminated on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

However, Alonso has been handed a major boost with attacking midfielder Cole Palmer expected to return to the squad for the meeting with Manchester United.

The England international missed Wednesday's encounter against Liverpool after receiving a suspension during Chelsea's previous Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur.

His return gives Alonso another attacking option as Chelsea look to improve their creativity and create more goalscoring opportunities against Michael Carrick's side.

Despite the encouraging news about Palmer, Chelsea's preparations have been affected by several injury concerns involving key first-team players.

French defender Maxence Lacroix sustained a suspected hamstring injury during the Liverpool match and was substituted before half-time. He is expected to undergo further medical examinations to determine the severity of the problem.

Midfielder Moises Caicedo and defender Malo Gusto are also facing fitness concerns after experiencing physical discomfort during the same encounter.

Both players will require further assessments before Chelsea's medical team can establish whether they are fit enough to feature on Saturday.

The situation has created additional selection problems for Alonso, particularly with several other first-team players already unavailable through injury.

Club captain Reece James remains sidelined following knee surgery and is not expected to return until the beginning of next year.

Brazilian forward Joao Pedro is also recovering from a thigh injury, while young winger Jamie Gittens continues his rehabilitation after suffering an ankle problem during international duty.

Nevertheless, Chelsea could receive another positive update in goal, with Emiliano Martinez reportedly making better-than-expected progress in his recovery from a broken jaw.

Jorrel Hato and Pep Chavarria are also available for selection after missing the midweek Carabao Cup encounter against Liverpool.

With several fitness decisions still to be made, Alonso could make changes to his starting lineup when Chelsea welcome Manchester United.

Chelsea's predicted starting XI in a 4-2-3-1 formation includes Penders in goal, with Acheampong, Colwill, Fofana and Neto forming the defensive line.

Caicedo and Henderson are expected to occupy the central midfield positions, while Hato, Palmer and Rogers could operate behind Welbeck in attack.

Palmer's expected return is an important development for Chelsea, although Alonso will be hoping his remaining injury concerns do not further weaken the squad before kickoff.

Saturday's fixture presents the Blues with an opportunity to return to winning ways, while Manchester United will also be looking to secure a positive result in what promises to be a competitive Premier League encounter.
