Valentin Barco believes £100m Chelsea target can fill the void left by Lionel Messi

Chelsea midfielder Valentín Barco has backed fellow Argentine Nico Paz as a possible successor to Lionel Messi in Argentina’s number 10 shirt, saying he would love to see the young playmaker inherit the prestigious jersey.

According to The Athletic on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Barco praised Paz’s ability, describing him as a complete footballer capable of making a significant contribution to Argentina’s future.

Paz, 22, has attracted attention through his performances for Como under former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fàbregas. His creativity, technical quality and attacking contributions have reportedly put him on the radar of several European clubs, including Chelsea.

The Premier League club are understood to have sent scouts to assess him during Como’s Champions League defeat to Feyenoord and their Serie A meeting with Fiorentina. Paz scored and provided an assist against Fiorentina, then repeated that contribution with another goal and assist against Torino.

He continued his impressive run by recording three goal contributions in Como’s 9-1 victory over Lens. His recent displays have added to the interest surrounding him and strengthened his reputation as an influential attacking midfielder.

Chelsea are reportedly weighing up a move, although a January transfer is considered unlikely. Real Madrid also have a reported £70 million buyback clause, while Chelsea could consider an offer of approximately £100 million. No deal has been confirmed.

Barco’s comments are informed by the time he has spent with Paz in the Argentina setup. The pair shared accommodation during the 2026 World Cup, spending more than 50 days together, as well as attending several training camps.

Asked which young Argentine players could make an impact internationally, Barco identified Paz and explained his admiration for the midfielder’s game.

“Nico, maybe. Nico is very, very good. He’s very well-rounded in every way. Personally, I really like his playing style,” Barco said.

He was then asked whether Paz could eventually take over Messi’s number 10 shirt. Barco expressed support for the possibility, referring again to their time together and the relationship they had built.

“I really hope so. I would love to see it. I shared a room with him at the World Cup; we spent more than 50 days together, and in a few training camps. We know each other’s journeys. I hope he can wear it,” he added.

Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martínez has also backed the idea of Paz potentially carrying the responsibility associated with the famous shirt. The number 10 has particular significance for the national team because of Messi’s legacy, making the question of a future successor an important one for supporters.

Paz’s creative statistics provide further evidence of his influence. He is reportedly averaging 2.68 chances created per 90 minutes this season, underlining his standing as one of Argentina’s promising attacking prospects.

With Chelsea monitoring his progress and established international teammates publicly praising his qualities, Paz is attracting growing attention. His performances at Como will remain central to the discussion about his future, while Barco’s endorsement has added an international dimension to the interest in his development.
