Chelsea youngster Landon Emenalo has received mixed reactions from Celtic supporters following his debut for the Scottish club in their emphatic 7-1 victory over Hearts on Sunday.
According to a report by Football London on Monday, October 19, 2026, the young defender struggled to impress some Celtic fans during his first appearance for the team. However, his lack of recent competitive action has been suggested as a possible explanation for his performance.
Emenalo joined Celtic on loan from Chelsea after attracting the attention of Blues manager Xabi Alonso during the club’s pre-season preparations. The American-born left-back is the son of former Chelsea sporting director Michael Emenalo.
The teenager featured in Chelsea’s summer tour of Australia and Asia, where his performances reportedly caught Alonso’s attention. However, the arrival of Pep Chavarria, combined with the availability of other defensive options, contributed to the decision to send him out on loan.
After recovering from an injury he sustained while at Chelsea, Emenalo finally made his debut for Celtic against Hearts, replacing Kieran Tierney during the second half.
Despite Celtic’s convincing win, some supporters questioned the youngster’s fitness and ability to cope with the pace and physical demands of senior football.
One fan described the defender as being “well off the pace,” while another expressed concerns about his speed in a post on X, stating: “Slow as treacle. Hopefully he gets up to speed with more games.”
Another supporter also questioned his physical condition, suggesting that he “looked blown” during his appearance.
Nevertheless, not all Celtic fans were critical of Emenalo’s performance. Some offered a more sympathetic assessment, with one supporter pointing out that the defender continued to make himself available for passes despite finding it difficult to match the game’s intensity. The fan also noted that he had spent an extended period without competitive football before making his debut.
The criticism needs to be viewed in context, as the match represented Emenalo’s first competitive senior appearance. He is still adjusting to a new club and the demands of first-team football after recovering from injury.
Celtic’s busy fixture schedule could provide the young defender with further opportunities to demonstrate his abilities and improve his match fitness. With the club competing in domestic and European competitions, Emenalo could gain valuable experience as the season progresses.
However, competition for the left-back position remains a challenge, particularly with Kieran Tierney also available. Emenalo will need to improve his fitness, consistency and confidence if he hopes to earn more regular playing time at Celtic.
