Three Reasons Chelsea Were Right To Sell Nicolas Jackson Despite His Aston Villa Form

Chelsea’s decision to transfer Nicolas Jackson to Aston Villa has come under renewed scrutiny after the Senegalese striker scored twice in his new side’s 2-1 win over Manchester City. His performance has raised questions about whether the London club should have retained him, particularly as Joao Pedro is currently unavailable because of injury.

According to a report published by The Athletic on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Jackson’s impressive display has reignited the debate surrounding his departure. However, there are three key reasons why Chelsea’s decision to sell the forward could still benefit the club under manager Xabi Alonso.

The first relates to the competition for the centre-forward position. When fit, Pedro is expected to lead Chelsea’s attack, potentially leaving Jackson competing for a supporting role rather than enjoying a guaranteed place in the starting lineup.

Both players can move away from the penalty area to connect with teammates and help create attacking opportunities. However, Pedro has demonstrated greater efficiency in front of goal, which could make him the preferred option when both forwards are available.

Jackson’s strongest Premier League season at Chelsea produced 14 goals in 2,810 minutes of action. Pedro, by comparison, scored one more league goal last season despite playing 136 fewer minutes. That difference suggests the Brazilian offered a more productive return during his available playing time.

Keeping Jackson as a secondary option could therefore have created difficulties for Chelsea. The striker might have struggled to accept reduced playing time, particularly after establishing himself as an important attacking figure. Selling him could help avoid potential dissatisfaction while allowing Alonso to build his forward line around the players he considers most suitable for his system.

The second consideration is the financial advantage of the transfer. Chelsea reportedly signed Jackson for approximately £30 million in 2024 before agreeing to sell him to Aston Villa for around £65 million. The transaction consequently generated a substantial profit and provided the club with additional resources for future recruitment.

Financial considerations remain important to Chelsea’s transfer strategy. The club has faced commercial pressures, including the absence of a front-of-shirt sponsor during the summer. In that context, selling players for considerably more than their original acquisition costs can help support spending on other positions and maintain flexibility in the transfer market.

The third issue concerns Jackson’s finishing. While the striker has demonstrated useful qualities in his movement, physical involvement and ability to link up with teammates, questions have persisted about his consistency in converting scoring opportunities.

Data from Understat indicates that Jackson scored 14 Premier League goals during his debut season despite registering an expected goals figure of 19.86. In the following campaign, he recorded 10 goals against an expected goals total of 13.83.

These figures suggest that Jackson scored fewer goals than the quality and quantity of his chances would typically indicate. Although expected goals statistics cannot fully measure a striker’s overall contribution, the numbers highlight an area where his performances could have improved.

His brace against Manchester City demonstrates that Jackson remains capable of producing decisive moments, but one outstanding performance does not necessarily resolve the longer-term questions about his finishing.

Ultimately, Chelsea’s decision involves balancing his potential and attacking contribution against squad competition, financial considerations and his record in front of goal. Jackson’s early success at Aston Villa may encourage further debate, but his departure could still prove beneficial if Pedro delivers consistently and the club uses the transfer proceeds effectively.
