We've Been Performing Like That Every Week, Just Not Putting Them In The Net – Delap On His Brace

Liam Delap has expressed his satisfaction after scoring twice against Manchester City, describing the performance as an important moment for both himself and his team following a difficult period in front of goal. The striker believes his side had been producing encouraging displays consistently but had struggled to turn their attacking opportunities into goals. Their performance against City, however, demonstrated that they possess the quality and ability to become more effective in the final third.

According to a post shared by football journalist Fabrizio Romano on X, Delap explained that the team's overall performances had remained strong despite its difficulties with finishing. He suggested that the players had not suddenly improved their approach or changed the way they played against Manchester City. Instead, they finally managed to convert the chances they created, allowing their efforts to produce a more rewarding result.

The forward made it clear that the lack of goals had not necessarily reflected the quality of the team's performances in previous matches. In his assessment, his teammates had regularly shown the right attitude, movement and attacking intent, but their inability to finish opportunities had prevented them from receiving the rewards they deserved.

"To be honest, we've been performing like that every week, just not putting them in the net," Delap said.

His statement highlighted the frustration that can develop when a team consistently creates scoring opportunities without making them count. Although producing good attacking performances is important, Delap recognises that converting chances remains essential, particularly when facing opponents with the experience and quality of Manchester City.

He further explained that the latest performance provided an opportunity for the team to demonstrate what it could achieve when its players were more decisive in front of goal. Rather than allowing missed opportunities to undermine their attacking efforts, they showed greater composure and determination when chances presented themselves.

"But today we showed we can put them in the net!" he added.

Delap's two goals against Manchester City were particularly significant because they came after a challenging spell in which the striker had struggled to find the back of the net. For a forward, scoring regularly is an important measure of confidence and effectiveness, and an extended period without goals can create additional pressure to deliver. His brace therefore represented a welcome breakthrough and offered a positive response to his recent difficulties.

The goals also allowed Delap to make a direct contribution to his team's attacking performance against a highly regarded opponent. Scoring twice in such a fixture can provide a striker with renewed confidence, especially when previous appearances have not produced the desired results. His performance demonstrated the importance of remaining patient and continuing to work towards improving his finishing rather than becoming discouraged by missed opportunities.

Beyond his personal achievement, Delap's comments placed considerable emphasis on the collective efforts of his teammates. He did not suggest that the team's previous performances had been poor simply because the players had failed to score enough goals. Instead, he maintained that their attacking approach had been effective and that finishing had been the major weakness preventing them from achieving better outcomes.

His remarks also reflected the importance of confidence within an attacking unit. When players begin converting chances, it can encourage greater belief across the team and make subsequent attacking situations easier to approach. Delap's goals could therefore provide encouragement for his teammates as they look to maintain their attacking standards.

For the striker, the Manchester City encounter offered evidence that the team's consistent efforts could finally translate into goals. His brace ended a frustrating spell in front of goal while reinforcing his belief that the players had been performing well throughout their recent matches.
