According to a report by Metro on Thursday, November 5, 2026, former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes Estêvão could present Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso with a difficult selection decision following the Brazilian youngster's impressive display against Manchester United.
Gerrard was particularly impressed by the winger's performance in Chelsea's 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge last Saturday.
The 19-year-old made his first Premier League start of the season and caught attention with his attacking movement, direct approach and willingness to test the opposition goalkeeper.
His display came after Alonso faced questions over his decision to leave the youngster on the bench during Chelsea's Carabao Cup meeting with Liverpool last week. Reports have also suggested that Estêvão is unhappy with his limited playing opportunities since arriving at Stamford Bridge.
However, Gerrard believes the Brazilian has shown that he deserves a more prominent role in Alonso's plans.
Speaking on The Overlap, the former England international praised the teenager's flair, attacking ability and determination to make things happen in the final third.
"He's exciting. He's great to watch," Gerrard said. "Your typical Brazilian, where it's about flair, it's about quality, but I really like that he's very direct. I like that he's hungry to get shots off."
Gerrard further praised Estêvão's willingness to take shots instead of always looking for another pass, adding that his attacking mentality could bring more quality to Chelsea's forward line.
He also believes the youngster's determination to impress Alonso was clear during the match against Manchester United.
However, Gerrard expects the competition for attacking positions to become more intense when João Pedro returns from injury, with Pedro Neto also available as another established option.
"So, he's desperate to impress the manager. And he's going to give Xabi a problem when Joao Pedro comes back, because Pedro Neto's a great player as well, but five doesn't go into that front four, so it's going to be interesting," Gerrard added.
Estêvão's impressive performance has strengthened his chances of earning more regular playing time as Chelsea continue their campaign.
