Former Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has named Casemiro among the greatest midfielders in football history, ranking the Brazilian third on his personal list while leaving out Manchester United legend Paul Scholes.
According to a report published by Manchester Evening News on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Kroos believes Casemiro deserves greater recognition for his contributions to the game, despite Scholes’ remarkable achievements during his career at Old Trafford.
Scholes made 717 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 155 goals and providing 84 assists. He also collected 11 Premier League titles, becoming one of the most influential players during Sir Alex Ferguson’s highly successful managerial tenure.
However, Kroos has placed another former United midfielder ahead of the Englishman, highlighting Casemiro’s achievements and importance to the teams he represented.
The Brazilian established himself as a key figure at Real Madrid, where he formed a formidable midfield trio with Kroos and Luka Modric. Their partnership played a significant role in the Spanish club’s dominance of European football, helping Madrid secure several major honours.
During his time at the Santiago Bernabeu, Casemiro won five Champions League trophies, three La Liga titles and one Copa del Rey. His successful spell in Spain ended in 2022 when he completed a high-profile move to Manchester United.
Speaking on the Einfach mal Luppen podcast, Kroos explained his selection while acknowledging that former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira had also been considered for the position.
“My number three is Casemiro, although Patrick Vieira was also in contention,” the former Germany international said.
Kroos argued that Casemiro’s influence was not always fully appreciated by observers outside the club, despite his impressive trophy collection and crucial role in the midfield.
He also praised the Brazilian’s technical improvement throughout their years together at Real Madrid, noting that his development added another dimension to his game.
Casemiro went on to make 160 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 26 goals and registering 14 assists. He won both the League Cup and FA Cup during his time in England before departing for Inter Miami on a free transfer.
Kroos’ ranking highlights the regard in which he holds his former teammate, whose achievements at Real Madrid and Manchester United have made him one of the most decorated defensive midfielders of his generation.
