According to a report by Barca Universal on Thursday, October 15, 2026, Barcelona are reportedly considering selling Frenkie de Jong during the January transfer window as uncertainty grows over the midfielder’s future following his return from a lengthy injury absence.
The Dutch international has missed around three and a half months of action after suffering a knee injury at the last World Cup. He has now returned to training with Barcelona’s first team after medical examinations revealed damage to the medial collateral ligament in his right knee.
De Jong opted for non-surgical treatment, but his extended absence has affected his position in manager Hansi Flick’s plans.
Before his injury, the 29-year-old was an important figure in Barcelona’s midfield alongside Pedri. However, competition for places has increased following the club’s summer signings, with Rodri reportedly establishing himself as a regular starter alongside Pedri.
According to MARCA, De Jong’s future could become a major talking point if he struggles to secure regular playing time after regaining full fitness.
Although the midfielder extended his contract until 2029 last year, he could consider leaving if his role does not improve. Barcelona may also be willing to discuss a transfer because of his high salary.
Competition for midfield positions remains intense, with Gavi, Bernal and Brian Farinas among the other options available to Flick. De Jong will therefore need to impress in training and matches to regain his place in the starting lineup.
There have also been suggestions that Flick could consider using the Dutchman in central defence. However, this would likely be a temporary option, particularly with Pau Cubarsi, Gerard Martin and Eric Garcia available.
De Jong has reportedly attracted interest from Chelsea and Manchester United, making a January departure a possibility. Ultimately, his recovery, performances and importance to Flick’s plans will determine whether Barcelona decide to keep him or consider offers for his services.
