President John Dramani Mahama has called for major improvements in Ghanaian football as discussions continue ahead of the 2027 Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidential election.
During a meeting with representatives of Medeama Sporting Club, Nations FC and Ampem Darkoa Ladies at the Presidency in September 2026, Mahama urged the GFA and the Referees Association of Ghana to work towards improving the standard of domestic football.
According to the Ghana News Agency, the President identified concerns about refereeing as one of the issues affecting the local league. He said allegations of unfair officiating were discouraging supporters from attending matches and contributing to declining gate revenue.
Mahama therefore called on football authorities and club owners to help make the Ghana Premier League more competitive and attractive to spectators.
His comments come as attention turns towards the GFA presidential election scheduled for 2027. Current GFA president Kurt Okraku has not confirmed whether he will seek a third term, saying he will announce his decision when the time is right.
Former Black Stars captain André Ayew has also been linked with a possible presidential bid, although he has not officially declared his candidacy.
However, Mahama has not publicly endorsed either Okraku or Ayew in the reports reviewed. His latest comments focus on improving football administration, refereeing and the quality of the domestic league.
As the election approaches, football stakeholders will be watching for further statements from the President and other key figures about the future direction of Ghana football.
