Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has explained why he did not introduce Brazilian winger Estevao Willian during the Blues’ Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool, despite supporters calling for the youngster to come off the bench.
According to a report by GOAL on Thursday, October 29, 2026, Chelsea’s cup campaign ended on Wednesday after they lost 6-5 in a penalty shootout at Anfield. The teams had played out a 1-1 draw during normal time before Liverpool prevailed from the spot to secure their place in the next round.
As the contest progressed, Chelsea fans urged Alonso to give Estevao an opportunity, but the manager opted against making the change. He later explained that the physical nature of the match had influenced his attacking selections and his decision to keep the young Brazilian on the sidelines.
Alonso revealed that Chelsea had deliberately started the game with Pedro Neto, Danny Welbeck and Morgan Rogers in forward positions because they anticipated an intense physical battle against Liverpool. He suggested that the demands of the encounter made his original tactical approach more suitable for the circumstances.
The Spanish coach also pointed to fitness concerns involving midfielder Moises Caicedo and defender Malo Gusto, explaining that their physical issues affected his decisions during the match. Those complications added to the challenges he faced while attempting to manage his squad throughout the contest.
Addressing the supporters’ reaction, Alonso acknowledged that fans had expressed their opinions about the substitutions. Nevertheless, he defended his choices and stressed that the season would provide opportunities for players across the squad.
The manager reassured Chelsea supporters that Estevao remained part of his plans and would have a role to play as the campaign continued. He emphasised that the season was still long and encouraged fans to remain patient rather than interpret the winger’s absence against Liverpool as a sign that he had been overlooked permanently.
Estevao’s limited involvement under Alonso has nevertheless become a talking point. The Brazilian has started only two matches this season, both in the Carabao Cup against Luton Town and Leeds United. His opportunities in the Premier League have been particularly restricted, with the teenager reportedly playing just 47 minutes in the competition.
The lack of regular first-team action has also fuelled speculation about his future at Stamford Bridge. Reports have linked Barcelona with a possible move for the winger in 2027, suggesting that the Spanish club could monitor his situation if his playing time remains limited.
However, other reports indicate that Estevao wants to continue his development at Chelsea. The club’s ownership is also reportedly unwilling to consider offers for the player, whose contract runs until 2033. His long-term agreement gives Chelsea significant control over his future as they assess how best to manage his progress.
Chelsea’s recent results have added further pressure on Alonso. The team has recorded two victories in its last six matches and sits fifth in the Premier League standings following a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Attention now turns to Saturday’s league fixture against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. Alonso will be seeking a response from his players after the cup disappointment, while supporters will be watching to see whether Estevao receives another opportunity to demonstrate his ability.
