“We need to rest” — Real Madrid star Denzel Dumfries sends message on player workload

Real Madrid defender Denzel Dumfries has emphasised the importance of adequate rest and recovery for professional footballers, warning that the growing number of fixtures is placing increasing demands on players.

According to Madrid Universal on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the Dutch international discussed the issue while speaking at the XV Sports Global Medicine Summit at the Santiago Bernabéu. The event, organised by the Sports Doctor Network, also featured Real Madrid’s head of medical services, Dr Niko Mihic.

Addressing the physical demands of modern football, Dumfries explained that players need sufficient recovery time to cope with an increasingly crowded schedule. Footballers are expected to compete across domestic leagues, cup competitions and European tournaments while also fulfilling international duties with their national teams.

The packed calendar has raised concerns about fatigue, physical strain and the possibility of injuries. With clubs and national teams competing for players’ availability throughout the year, recovery has become an increasingly important part of maintaining performance and fitness.

Dumfries expressed his concern about the demands placed on players, stating: “We need to rest, we play a lot of matches…”

The 30-year-old also highlighted sleep as one of the most effective ways athletes can help their bodies recover after matches and intensive training sessions.

“Sleep is crucial; we need to recover as quickly as possible, and sleep is one of the most powerful tools we [footballers] have to achieve that and to take care of our bodies,” he added.

His comments reflect the experience he has gained throughout a career spent competing at the highest level. Having played in the Netherlands and Italy before moving to Spain, the defender has experienced the demands of different leagues and competitions.

Dumfries is also adapting to life at Real Madrid after arriving from Inter Milan during the summer transfer window. The Spanish club reportedly secured his services by activating a €20 million release clause, bringing him in as a replacement for Dani Carvajal, who left at the end of last season after his contract expired.

Since completing the move, the Netherlands international has made 11 appearances across all competitions and registered one assist. Although his performances have not been particularly disappointing, he is still working to establish himself as a regular member of the starting team.

Manager José Mourinho has not always selected Dumfries at right-back, occasionally deploying Federico Valverde in the position instead. That decision underlines the competition for places and suggests the Dutchman still has work to do to become the manager’s preferred option.

Dumfries will therefore be looking to improve his performances and demonstrate greater consistency as the campaign continues. Securing a regular starting role will depend on his ability to meet Mourinho’s expectations and make the most of future opportunities.

Beyond his personal ambitions, his remarks at the medical summit have drawn attention to a wider issue affecting professional football. As the number of matches continues to increase, adequate rest, effective recovery routines and player welfare remain important considerations for clubs, coaches and medical teams.
