Romeo Lavia shares how Eden Hazard is helping him thrive at Chelsea this season

Romeo Lavia has credited former Chelsea forward Eden Hazard with providing valuable encouragement as he continues to improve his performances at Stamford Bridge. The midfielder revealed that maintaining a close relationship with the Belgian legend gives him additional motivation to succeed at the club.

According to The Athletic, the pair remain in regular contact, with Hazard continuing to offer support since Lavia joined Chelsea from Southampton in the summer of 2023. Their connection was evident again on Saturday when the former forward attended Chelsea's Premier League match against Manchester United.

Lavia produced an impressive display as the Blues secured a 2-0 victory, with his performance widely regarded as one of his strongest since arriving in west London. The 22-year-old was particularly influential in midfield, helping his side control important areas of the contest.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Lavia explained how much Hazard's presence meant to him. He described the former Chelsea star as an important figure in his life and said they communicate frequently. Seeing Hazard pleased with his performance, he added, gives him an extra reason to keep improving and make the club legend proud.

Hazard had previously encouraged Lavia to choose Chelsea when the midfielder was considering his next career move. Their relationship has remained strong since the transfer, and the former forward's continued interest in his progress appears to have become a meaningful source of encouragement.

Lavia's development under manager Xabi Alonso is also becoming increasingly noticeable in his performances. His contribution has grown, particularly in defensive areas, where recent statistics indicate a significant improvement compared with the previous season.

Figures from FotMob show that he is averaging 14.56 defensive contributions per match this campaign, compared with 8.83 last season. His tackling output has also increased from 1.91 to 3.15 per 90 minutes, while his average interceptions have risen from 1.19 to 2.91.

The midfielder has registered an improvement in his recorded top speed as well, reaching 32.7 kilometres per hour this season after posting 31.9 km/h during the previous campaign. These figures point to greater involvement in defensive work and an increased physical contribution to Chelsea's midfield.

His performance against Manchester United offered a practical example of that progress, strengthening the impression that he is becoming an important part of Alonso's plans. Maintaining his fitness and consistency will be essential as competition for places continues within the squad.

Chelsea's next assignment is a Premier League trip to face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Lavia will hope to carry his recent form into that encounter and continue building his standing under Alonso.

With Hazard remaining supportive and his own performances improving, the young midfielder has several reasons to remain confident as he works towards becoming a central figure in Chelsea's long-term plans.
