José Mourinho has played down the debate over Vinícius Júnior and Yan Diomandé as competition for places intensifies in Real Madrid’s attack. The Portuguese manager insists that team balance matters more than individual status.
Vinícius remains suspended for Real Madrid’s next two matches and could return against Celta Vigo on November 21. Meanwhile, summer signing Yan Diomandé has impressed with his recent performances, particularly his contribution to the team’s defensive balance.
His displays have sparked discussions among supporters about whether he could challenge the Brazilian for a starting place. However, Mourinho rejected suggestions that Real Madrid look more balanced without Vinícius in the starting eleven. Speaking on Saturday ahead of the match against Santander, he insisted that his team works hard to maintain its balance in every situation.
“Offensively, defensively, with the ball, without the ball… I see that consistently,” Mourinho explained. He also praised Vinícius, describing him as a great player whom the team needs. Nevertheless, he made it clear that the Brazilian will not automatically start every game. “Saying we need him doesn’t necessarily mean he will start every single match. I don’t see that as a problem, either,” he added. Mourinho’s comments suggest that he intends to manage competition within the squad according to the team’s needs rather than guarantee anyone a permanent place in the starting lineup.
