Wesley Fofana has faced criticism from frustrated Chelsea supporters following his performance in the club’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, with some fans questioning his future and urging the club to consider selling him during the January transfer window.
The French defender struggled during the opening half, making several mistakes that allowed Manchester United to threaten Chelsea’s defence. According to a report by Football London on Saturday, October 31, 2026, his display raised fresh concerns about his consistency and reliability at the back.
Fofana returned to Xabi Alonso’s starting lineup after being left as an unused substitute in Chelsea’s previous three Premier League matches. However, his opportunity to re-establish himself did not begin as planned, as he appeared uncomfortable in several defensive situations.
Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole expressed particular concern about the defender’s awareness after Amad Diallo dispossessed him in a dangerous area. Speaking during TNT Sports’ coverage, Cole suggested Fofana had failed to recognise the danger quickly enough and questioned the nature of his attempted challenge.
Cole described the incident as worrying from Chelsea’s perspective, adding that the defender appeared slow to react. Former Scotland international Ally McCoist also criticised the action, arguing that Fofana’s defending in the situation was below the required standard.
The comments reflected the concerns of several supporters, many of whom subsequently used X to express their dissatisfaction. One fan described the defender as a liability and called for Chelsea to move him on when the January transfer window opens. Another supporter claimed it was difficult to remember a worse defensive performance from the player.
Other reactions focused on the transfer fee Chelsea paid to secure his services from Leicester City. The club spent an initial £70 million on the Frenchman, with additional payments potentially increasing the overall cost to £75 million. Some supporters questioned whether his performances had justified such a significant investment, while others openly suggested that the club should consider ending his stay at Stamford Bridge.
Despite the difficult first half, Fofana’s afternoon improved after the break. Around the hour mark, he was involved in an incident inside the penalty area when Lisandro Martinez appeared to push him in the face following a corner delivered by Estêvão Willian. The referee reviewed the situation, and Martinez received a second yellow card, leaving Manchester United with ten players. Chelsea were subsequently awarded a penalty.
The hosts went on to complete a 2-0 victory, with Morgan Rogers opening the scoring before Cole Palmer converted from the spot. Estêvão also had an effort ruled out for offside during the encounter.
Fofana’s contribution to the penalty incident offered a more positive moment after his difficult opening period, although it did little to prevent criticism from supporters. Since arriving from Leicester City, injuries have repeatedly interrupted his progress, limiting him to 79 appearances across four years at Chelsea.
The defender’s fitness record and inconsistent performances have therefore remained subjects of discussion. His latest display has renewed questions about his standing in Alonso’s plans, although the supporters’ calls for a January departure do not establish that Chelsea are preparing to sell him.
