Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand has urged Michael Carrick to give Shea Lacey more opportunities in the senior side after the young winger made a decisive impact in the Champions League win over Roma. In a report published by Manchester Evening News on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Ferdinand singled out the teenager’s confidence and contribution during United’s comeback.
United overturned a difficult situation on Tuesday to claim a 3-2 victory, with Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha playing central roles in the late turnaround. Ferdinand was especially encouraged by what Lacey offered after coming off the bench in the second half.
The winger replaced Amad Diallo in the 75th minute, with United still trailing 2-1. The hosts pushed forward and produced an equaliser in the 83rd minute. Fernandes supplied an excellent cross for Cunha, who converted to bring the contest level and restore parity.
Lacey then helped create the winning goal three minutes later. Receiving the ball on the right side, the youngster sent a precise, low delivery into Cunha’s path. The Brazilian brought the pass under control and finished superbly beyond Roma goalkeeper Devis Vasquez, sealing the victory.
Ferdinand discussed the performance on his podcast, focusing on the assurance Lacey displayed despite his limited senior experience. He also suggested that Lacey’s personality stood out, even though the winger is relatively small in stature.
“How fearless he looked, comfortable with the ball. Yeah, he’s little in stature, but he looks like he’s got a big character, big personality,” Ferdinand said.
He also highlighted Lacey’s part in the decisive goal, praising the quality of the pass and the confidence required to make such a contribution at a crucial moment. The teenager did not hide from the responsibility. Instead, he looked keen to receive the ball, take on the situation and show what he could offer.
Ferdinand believes Carrick should consider giving the youngster a more prominent role in the first-team squad. He believes the cameo against Roma demonstrated that Lacey can contribute when called upon and should be rewarded with further opportunities. Carrick’s handling of the winger will now attract attention.
Lacey’s statistics also reflected a productive appearance. Squawka recorded one assist and one chance created during his 15 minutes on the pitch. He won four of the five duels he contested and completed all seven of his attempted passes, giving away possession through none of those passes.
The 19-year-old has now made six senior appearances in all competitions this season, scoring once and providing one assist. He previously made his first-team debut under former manager Ruben Amorim during the 2025-26 campaign. Ferdinand’s comments place fresh emphasis on the youngster’s development, with the Roma display offering a clear example of the impact he can make when given time on the pitch.
His outing was notable because United needed a goal and had little time remaining. Lacey advanced play and delivered the pass that allowed Cunha to complete the comeback. That sequence gave Ferdinand a clear basis for his praise and encouragement.
