Manchester City's Premier League title ambitions have suffered another setback after three successive defeats, while Tottenham Hotspur are facing fresh questions following their disappointing loss to Leeds United. According to a report by Sky Sports on Sunday, November 8, 2026, City's defensive shortcomings have helped Arsenal establish a six-point lead at the top of the table, strengthening the Gunners' position in the title race.
Enzo Maresca initially enjoyed an outstanding beginning to his time at Manchester City, guiding the team to victory in each of his first seven Premier League matches. However, successive losses against Aston Villa, Brighton and Nottingham Forest have exposed weaknesses that are threatening to undermine their campaign.
City's latest setback came at the City Ground, where they suffered a 3-1 defeat after a series of defensive errors contributed to Nottingham Forest's goals. Josko Gvardiol was dispossessed in the build-up to the opening goal, while Marc Guehi endured another difficult performance and was withdrawn at half-time.
Concerns have also emerged over City's midfield, particularly the performances of Enzo Fernandez and Elliot Anderson against Forest's physical approach. Ryan Yates and Xaver Schlager were influential in the central areas, raising questions about whether Maresca's side can cope with opponents who impose themselves physically and disrupt their usual style of play.
Arsenal, by contrast, have continued to build their title challenge on defensive organisation and consistency. Mikel Arteta's team recorded a narrow 1-0 victory over Hull City, securing another clean sheet despite failing to produce a particularly convincing attacking display.
The Gunners' defensive record has been especially impressive, having conceded only twice across their nine Premier League matches outside the 3-0 defeat against Brighton.
Their ability to remain defensively reliable has also been encouraging because William Saliba is still working towards full fitness. Ezri Konsa, who joined from Aston Villa for £55 million, has made an important contribution by providing stability alongside Gabriel.
Konsa's performances have helped maintain Arsenal's defensive strength, allowing Arteta to avoid rushing Saliba back into the starting lineup before he is fully ready.
Tottenham, meanwhile, experienced frustration after suffering a 1-0 defeat away to Leeds United, bringing their positive run under Roberto De Zerbi to an end.
Spurs struggled to cope with Leeds' intensity and found it difficult to create clear opportunities throughout the encounter. Their attacking combination of Omar Marmoush, Mohammed Kudus and Mathys Tel failed to deliver the influence required to change the outcome.
A challenge by Jayden Bogle on Tel also became a talking point, with the Leeds defender avoiding a booking despite a lengthy VAR review. Nevertheless, De Zerbi did not use the incident to excuse his team's disappointing performance.
The Tottenham manager openly acknowledged that his players had fallen below the required standard, stating: "We didn't play like a top team."
The defeat has increased scrutiny of Tottenham's attacking options, with questions emerging over whether the club should consider signing another centre-forward when the January transfer window opens.
While City must urgently improve their defensive performances and Tottenham search for greater attacking consistency, Arsenal continue to demonstrate the organisation and reliability needed to sustain a serious Premier League title challenge.
