Jaissle: Newcastle United “Need To Learn Fast”

Newcastle United boss Matthias Jaissle said that his side “need to learn fast” if they want to improve, after being dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Everton last night.

He added that they cannot keep using their youth as an “excuse” for poor results.

The 3-1 defeat means this is the first time the Magpies haven’t reached the quarter-finals of the competition since 2021.

Jaissle: “We Need To Be More Mature”

Jaissle said that Newcastle need to show more maturity in defensive situations, because mistakes at both ends of the pitch are costing them dearly. Everton’s first and third goals came from errors.

Newcastle had the better of the game, with 56% possession, and 28 shots to Everton’s 11, but the difference was that the Toffees took their chances.

Jaissle said after the game: “We need to avoid these mistakes, be more clinical in these situations.

“This is a learning process, but you don’t get the time. We need to learn fast, especially with these young lads. Being a young team is not an excuse anymore.”

Newcastle started the game well with a couple of early chances for Harvey Barnes and Joe Willock, but it was Everton who opened the scoring in the 34th minute.

It came from a mistake by Amar Dedić, who lost the ball near the corner flag after good pressure from Tyrique George. Hayden Hackney found James Garner who finished neatly past Lukaš Horníček.

Jaissle said: “This is again a no-risk zone where we clear the ball and nothing happens, and a couple of seconds later you concede the goal out of nothing.

“These are things we need to learn quickly. We had many occasions, many opportunities to score, big chances as well, but in their box we need to be more clinical to get a result.”

The Toffees doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time through Hackney. Everton countered quickly after a failed Newcastle attack, Jordan Pickford passing the ball out to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall who swept the ball through to Thierno Barry. The Frenchman crossed for Hackney to nod home.

Newcastle made a triple change at half-time, bringing on Joelinton, Yoane Wissa, and Anthony Elanga for Will Osula, Barnes, and Jacob Ramsey, but it made no difference.

Everton went 3-0 up in the 69th minute, and it was the same old story for Newcastle. They were sliced open in midfield, as they have been so many times this season, and Garner crossed into the box for Barry to stab home.

Dan Burn pulled one back for the Magpies in the 89th minute, but it was too little, too late.

The two teams play each other again on Monday night in the Premier League.
