Washington Commanders vs. Philadelphia Eagles: 3 reasons for optimism

The Washington Commanders have had a rough start to the 2026 season, but if there was ever an opportunity to turn things around, Week 8 might be it.

Coming off their bye week, the Commanders return to action against a familiar NFC East foe in the Philadelphia Eagles, who have plenty of problems of their own. Philadelphia enters the matchup riding a five-game losing streak, and injuries have only complicated matters for a team that hasn't looked much like the perennial contender we've grown accustomed to seeing.

Of course, Washington hasn't exactly been lighting the world on fire, either. However, the Commanders have had extra time to prepare, and there are some favorable matchups that could work in their favor.

Here are three reasons for optimism as Washington prepares to host Philadelphia in Week 8.

Philadelphia's struggling run defense

If the Commanders are looking for a way to establish themselves offensively, they might want to start on the ground.

Philadelphia's run defense has been downright dreadful this season, ranking last in the NFL in defensive EPA per rushing attempt. Things didn't get any better in Week 7, when the Eagles surrendered 204 rushing yards to the Dallas Cowboys, including 155 yards to running back Javonte Williams.

That's an inviting matchup for a Washington offense that has the added benefit of a mobile quarterback in Jayden Daniels.

Daniels has already demonstrated how dangerous he can be with his legs, including a 103-yard rushing performance against the New York Giants in Week 5. His ability to extend plays and take advantage of defensive breakdowns could create additional headaches for an Eagles defense that has struggled to maintain its assignments.

The Commanders don't necessarily need to reinvent the wheel offensively. Establishing the run, keeping the offense ahead of the chains, and allowing Daniels to make plays with his legs could go a long way toward controlling the tempo.

And against a Philadelphia defense that hasn't shown much ability to stop opposing rushing attacks, Washington should have opportunities to do exactly that.

Washington has the rest advantage

Sometimes the NFL schedule works in your favor, and this is one of those weeks for the Commanders.

Washington enters the matchup coming off its bye week, giving the coaching staff additional time to evaluate what's gone wrong through the first six games and make the necessary adjustments. Perhaps more importantly, it has provided an opportunity for players dealing with injuries to recover before returning to the field.

Philadelphia, meanwhile, isn't afforded the same luxury.

The Eagles are coming off a Monday night loss to the Cowboys and must prepare for a divisional opponent on a shortened week. That's a difficult turnaround under normal circumstances, but it's even more challenging for a team dealing with injuries and a five-game losing streak.

The extra preparation time should also benefit Daniels and Washington's offense, particularly when it comes to identifying weaknesses in Philadelphia's defense. Of course, additional rest doesn't automatically translate into better football. The Commanders still have to execute, something they've struggled to do consistently this season.

However, having nearly two weeks to prepare for a struggling division rival while that opponent has less than a full week to regroup is an advantage Washington needs to capitalize on.

Philadelphia's offense is searching for answers

Washington's defense hasn't been very reliable this season, but the good news is that Philadelphia's offense hasn't been much better. The Eagles enter Week 8 ranked near the bottom of the league in several major offensive categories, including 29th in scoring at just 17.7 points per game and 31st in total offense at 255.5 yards per contest.

Those numbers aren't exactly intimidating, particularly for a team that has been accustomed to fielding one of the NFL's more explosive offenses in recent years. Making matters worse for Philadelphia is the absence of quarterback Jalen Hurts, who won't return this season. Without Hurts under center, the Eagles have struggled to find consistency, and injuries elsewhere on the offense have only added to their problems.

That's not to suggest Washington's defense can simply show up and expect to dominate. The Commanders have had their own issues with missed assignments, tackling and allowing opponents to sustain drives.

However, this is a matchup that could allow the defense to regain some confidence.

If Washington can contain Philadelphia's rushing attack, generate pressure on the quarterback, and force the Eagles into obvious passing situations, it could create opportunities for turnovers and give Daniels additional possessions.

The Commanders aren't in a position to overlook anyone, especially a division rival. But with Philadelphia struggling to move the football consistently, Washington's defense has an opportunity to put together one of its better performances of the season.

And considering how things have gone through the first six games, that would certainly be a welcome development.
