Michael Carrick remains under scrutiny despite Sunday's promising showing at Leeds. The 1-1 draw at Elland Road extended United's run without victory to six matches across all competitions.
Nevertheless, there were encouraging signs for Carrick, who described the performance as a "fresh start" before a demanding sequence of fixtures, beginning with Wednesday's Champions League encounter away to Como. That precedes Premier League meetings with Bournemouth, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Liverpool.
There is considerable attention on off-field matters following Lisandro Martinez's explosive interview, in which he criticised director of football Jason Wilcox over the club's summer recruitment .
While the Argentine subsequently issued an apology and featured against Leeds, the outburst has intensified focus on the upcoming transfer window, when United will require reinforcements. Here's a round-up of the latest developments from Old Trafford...
Gary Neville says Carrick cannot afford for United to remain languishing in mid-table come January. United sit 13th after seven matches, closer to the relegation places than to the Champions League positions.
Neville believes Carrick warrants additional time in his maiden campaign as permanent manager but says United must show improvement, and quickly. Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: "Fifth [which will probably be enough for Champions League football] is a must for Michael Carrick to continue to grow and Manchester United continue to grow with investment.

"If they're 13th in January, he's got a problem because then you are what you are. Whereas I think it's still early enough, seven points from seven games, to say, 'Okay, still early in the season.' You can't say that after 15 games.
"It has to change in the next few weeks: Bournemouth is really important and Chelsea away. And how he manages the games in between that."

United's intentions for the forthcoming transfer window cast doubt over the prospects of the squad's experienced defensive players. According to Sky Sports, United are making centre-backs and left-backs a priority as part of their squad overhaul, having strengthened midfield during the summer and their attacking options 12 months previously.
There was frustration during the summer that United fell short of securing a replacement - or at least a viable alternative - to Luke Shaw, so it comes as little surprise that a left-back features prominently on their wishlist. United had targeted Lewis Hall but Newcastle refused to sanction a sale before tying the full-back down to a new contract.

United are additionally casting their eye over centre-back options. The future of Martinez, whose contract expires next summer, has been thrown into uncertainty following his recent outburst.
Harry Maguire is 33 and is similarly out of contract at the season's conclusion, while Matthijs de Ligt has endured injury problems, though he is fit once more following back surgery.
There is a strong case to be made that United also require reinforcement in attacking areas, both centrally and out wide. However, for the time being, the defensive department appears to be the club's main priority.
