Todd Bates praises Bishop Thomas' relentless effort at Oklahoma

While the Oklahoma Sooners haven't had the season they hoped for after a College Football Playoff berth, that doesn't mean it's all bad. The Sooners have seen some players step up at positions they thought lacked depth.

One of those positions was interior defensive line. Todd Bates' group returned Jayden Jackson and David Stone from last season's group, but lost key contributors in Gracen Halton and Damonic Williams. That meant the Sooners needed other guys on the team to step up and fill that void.

One of those has been Georgia State Panthers transfer, Bishop Thomas. The defensive lineman doesn't have the most impressive stats, with just eight tackles, one tackle for loss, and 0.5 sacks this season, but he's been a solid role player for the Sooners.d

Bates praised Thomas's work ethic this season.

"Bishop Thomas has put in the time since he got here… even when he didn’t know the playbook, his effort was phenomenal," Bates said. "And he’s going wherever he’s going like his hair is on fire and like somebody’s trying to hold him underwater."

Thomas' contributions show why defensive line production cannot always be measured by the stat sheet alone. His effort and willingness to learn have helped Oklahoma navigate the losses of key interior defenders, giving Bates another dependable option in the rotation. As the season progresses, continued growth in the scheme and more opportunities to disrupt opposing offenses could allow Thomas to make an even bigger impact.

For Oklahoma, finding reliable contributors beyond its established starters will be important during the second half of the season. The Sooners need depth along the defensive front to keep players fresh and maintain pressure throughout games, particularly against physical SEC opponents. Thomas has already demonstrated the work ethic to earn a role, and if he continues building on that foundation, he could become an increasingly valuable piece of Oklahoma's defensive line.
