A bizarre and dramatic moment in Ugandan football unfolded at the Philip Omondi Stadium in Lugogo, an outskirt of the capital city, Kampala, when a top-flight match was abruptly abandoned due to a sudden floodlight failure before a crowd of 10,000 spectators.

The high-stakes fixture on Tuesday, October 22, 2026, pitting former league champions KCCA FC against Uganda People’s Defence Forces FC (UPDF FC) was only eight minutes into action when the venue was plunged into complete darkness.

Pitch goes dark

The pitch went pitch-black, forcing players off the field as visibility vanished, leaving thousands of fans in suspense during a tense wait in the dark.

Under the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) Competitions Rules, match officials suspended play for up to 30 minutes to allow venue engineers to restore the lighting system. However, when the floodlights could not be brought back to required operational standards within the stipulated window, the referee officially called off the match.

Apology

Following the pitch blackout, host club KCCA FC issued a formal apology to supporters, match officials, visiting opponents UPDF FC, and the wider football community for the disruption, confirming that an internal investigation into the power failure has been launched.

“We sincerely apologise to our fans, supporters, UPDF FC, and everyone who turned up for the match for the inconvenience and disappointment caused by this incident,” the statement said.

KCCA said the matter was being treated with the seriousness it deserves and confirmed that the club would work with the relevant stakeholders to establish the circumstances surrounding the floodlight failure.

“The Club is treating the matter with the seriousness it deserves and will work with the relevant stakeholders to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the statement added.

AFCON challenges for East Africa

The blackout highlights broader infrastructure and contingency challenges facing East African host nations preparing for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The incident mirrors a similar floodlight outage in Kenya, where the Gambia national team experienced power interruptions during a past training session at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

As KCCA FC and UPDF FC await the rescheduling of their fixture, the dramatic night in Lugogo serves as a sharp reminder for 2027 AFCON co-hosts to ensure fully tested secondary generators and backup systems are firmly in place.
