Alexander Isak scored his sixth Premier League goal of the season on Sunday as Liverpool defeated Brighton 2-0, keeping the forward in pursuit of Erling Haaland at the top of the Golden Boot standings.

The Liverpool striker found the net in the 21st minute at Anfield, four minutes after Pascal Groß had scored an own goal to give the hosts an early advantage.

Liverpool protected their two-goal lead for the remainder of the match to secure all three points.

Isak's goal took him to six strikes in seven league appearances, leaving him three behind Manchester City's Haaland, who remains the competition's leading scorer with nine goals.

Haaland was also on target over the weekend, scoring City's goal in their 2-1 defeat away to Aston Villa on Saturday.

Nicolas Jackson scored twice for Villa, finding the net in the sixth and 60th minutes.

The City striker's goal meant he maintained his advantage at the top of the scoring chart despite his team's defeat.

Isak, meanwhile, has emerged as his closest challenger after adding to his tally against Brighton.

Bournemouth's Marcus Tavernier and Chelsea's João Pedro occupy the next positions with five goals each.

Tavernier scored during Bournemouth's 3-0 victory over Manchester United, while Pedro did not add to his total during Chelsea's 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

Isak's latest contribution ensured Liverpool took the points and kept him within reach of the leading scorer.

With the season still at an early stage, the three-goal difference leaves the Liverpool forward with ground to make up.
