The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) showcased its sporting talent at the 2026 Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, where ranger athletes joined thousands of runners in a competition that tested endurance, discipline and determination.

Ranger Ezra Lekuya emerged as one of the standout performers for the wildlife conservation agency after securing second place in the 10-kilometre race. His achievement highlighted the athletic ability of KWS personnel, whose professional responsibilities often demand physical fitness, resilience and commitment.

Lekuya’s podium finish was a notable moment for the KWS team, which took part in several race categories during the annual sporting event. Other ranger athletes also delivered commendable performances, while their colleagues tested themselves in the 21-kilometre half marathon and the demanding 42-kilometre full marathon.

The participation of KWS personnel demonstrated the agency’s involvement in activities that extend beyond wildlife protection and conservation. Through sport, the rangers had an opportunity to showcase their physical preparedness, interact with members of the public and represent their institution in a major national event.

The Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon remains a significant fixture on Kenya’s sporting calendar, attracting runners from different backgrounds who come together to compete, challenge themselves and celebrate the spirit of athletics. The event also provides a platform for corporate organisations, government institutions and other groups to engage with the public through sport.

Away from the competitive action, KWS added colour to the occasion through its presence at the Ngoma Zone. The entertainment area brought together music, dance and lively celebrations, giving participants and spectators an opportunity to enjoy the festive atmosphere along the marathon route.

The setting, with views overlooking Nairobi National Park, offered a distinctive backdrop to the celebrations and highlighted the close connection between the capital city, sporting activities and Kenya’s natural heritage.

For KWS, the marathon provided an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of its personnel while engaging with the public in a different setting. The performance by Lekuya and the participation of his teammates also placed the spotlight on the importance of fitness, perseverance and teamwork.

As the runners crossed the finish line in their respective categories, Lekuya’s second-place finish in the 10KM race stood out as a key achievement for the wildlife service. His performance offered the KWS contingent a reason to celebrate an event that brought together competition, entertainment and community participation.

The agency’s presence at the marathon reflected the versatility of its personnel, who serve in wildlife conservation while also pursuing sporting activities that demand discipline and determination.

Lekuya’s achievement was a proud moment for KWS, while the team’s participation across the different distances underscored the spirit of unity and sportsmanship that defines the Nairobi Marathon.
