A GoFundMe campaign for three-year-old soccer player Nevada Pierre has raised more than $53,000, as public sympathy grows over a youth match in Winter Park, Florida, where police were called to the field.
The boy’s mother, Martasia Griffin, has spoken out days after a video of the incident went viral, saying her son’s exceptional ability has placed him at the centre of an unexpected controversy. The funds are meant to help Nevada continue pursuing the sport in a more supportive environment.
Griffin told HuffPost that her son was stopped from playing because he was simply too good. She claimed the game was halted almost as soon as he stepped onto the pitch, and that officials were searching for a reason to limit his participation. According to her, police were called only after she began speaking up on his behalf.
She said Nevada has loved soccer since he was one year old, and alleged that he scored more than 40 goals in five games against children two years older than him.
Griffin described the moment her son was taken away from the game as heartbreaking, noting that he could not understand why he was being pulled from something he loved.
League officials, however, offered a different account of events. They alleged that Nevada pushed other players during the match, which they cited as the reason for the dispute.
Police confirmed that officers responded to the scene over a disagreement but stated that no criminal matter was involved.
The contrasting versions have drawn widespread attention online since the video surfaced, with many supporters rallying behind the young player through the fundraising campaign.
