Arsenal’s Boring Football Debate Is Back, and the Forest Win Has Given Critics Fresh Ammunition

Arsenal may have secured another important three points against Nottingham Forest, but their narrow 1-0 victory has reignited an uncomfortable debate about whether Mikel Arteta’s side are becoming too cautious to watch.

The Gunners dominated possession at the City Ground, yet it took until the 80th minute for them to register their only shot on target, with substitute Noni Madueke’s deflected strike finally breaking Forest’s resistance.

For a club with title ambitions and an attack packed with quality, that statistic raises legitimate questions about what Arsenal are doing with the ball and why territorial dominance is not consistently translating into clear goalscoring opportunities.

The problem was not simply that Arsenal scored only once, because difficult away matches often demand patience, but that they struggled to create enough danger despite spending so much time in possession.

Forest defended with discipline, closed down the spaces around their penalty area and made it difficult for Arsenal’s attackers to receive the ball in dangerous positions.

However, Arsenal also appeared short of attacking urgency, relying too heavily on controlled possession without consistently moving the opposition’s defensive structure or creating the openings needed to finish the job earlier.

That is where Arteta must take responsibility, because controlling a match should mean more than keeping the ball away from the opposition.

The best teams use possession to manipulate defensive lines, create overloads and generate high-quality chances, rather than allowing opponents to settle comfortably into their defensive shape.

Arsenal have enough individual quality to do that, but their slow starts and reliance on late goals are becoming increasingly noticeable.

Eight of their 11 Premier League goals this season had come after half-time following the Forest match, while the victory extended their run of second-half goals to six consecutive matches across the Premier League and Champions League.

Those numbers suggest that Arsenal are often finding solutions eventually, but they also raise the question of why the team repeatedly needs so long to discover its attacking rhythm.

Still, describing Arsenal as simply boring would ignore an important part of the conversation: grinding out victories is an essential quality for title contenders.

Championship-winning teams must find ways to collect points when their football is not flowing, especially away from home against opponents determined to frustrate them.

Arsenal’s defensive organisation, squad depth and ability to introduce impactful substitutes have helped them win matches that might previously have ended in dropped points.

Madueke’s decisive contribution against Forest was another example of that resilience, with Arteta’s changes providing the spark the starting eleven had failed to deliver.

The danger, however, Is that grinding out results becomes an excuse for failing to improve performances that should be more convincing.

Arsenal cannot expect their defence to remain almost flawless or their substitutes to rescue every difficult afternoon, particularly when facing opponents with greater attacking quality.

Arteta therefore needs to preserve the discipline that makes his team difficult to beat while encouraging more creativity, quicker combinations and greater attacking intent from the opening whistle.

The objective should not be to abandon control for the sake of entertainment, but to make that control more productive.

Arsenal are not necessarily a boring club, but their recent performances have given critics a reasonable argument that the football is becoming too predictable and cautious.

Winning ugly can be the mark of champions, yet consistently making matches harder than they need to be is a problem that even the best teams eventually have to solve.
