Football history is full of unforgettable moments, but few incidents shocked fans as much as the day former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson accidentally struck David Beckham above the eye with a flying football boot.
The dramatic incident happened in February 2003 following Manchester United’s 2–0 defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup fifth round. Ferguson was reportedly furious with his players after the disappointing performance, which saw United eliminated from the competition by their fierce rivals.

According to accounts of the incident, Ferguson kicked a football boot in the dressing room during a heated confrontation. The boot flew through the air and hit Beckham above his left eye, leaving the England international with a cut that required medical attention.
The incident quickly attracted widespread attention because Beckham was one of the club’s most famous players and Ferguson was renowned for his strict management style and high expectations.
Beckham later described the incident in his autobiography, revealing how angry he had become after being struck. He reportedly attempted to confront Ferguson, but several of his teammates intervened to prevent the situation from escalating further.
Ferguson subsequently apologised for the incident, but the damage to their relationship had already become a major talking point. Tensions between the two were widely discussed as Beckham’s time at Old Trafford approached its end.
Just a few months later, in the summer of 2003, Beckham completed a high-profile transfer to Spanish giants Real Madrid. His departure marked the end of an important chapter in his Manchester United career, where he had won several major trophies, including the UEFA Champions League in 1999.
Although the boot incident was not the sole reason for Beckham’s departure, it remains one of the most memorable episodes associated with the breakdown of his relationship with Ferguson.
More than two decades later, the incident continues to capture the attention of football fans, serving as a reminder of how emotions can boil over even in the dressing rooms of the world's biggest clubs.
