Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has questioned President William Ruto’s plan to host foreign football teams at Talanta Stadium, asking why Kenyan teams should not be given an opportunity to play at the facility.
Gachagua raised concerns about the cost of the stadium and the decision to have foreign clubs feature in the opening match. He argued that Kenyan teams should also be considered for such an important sporting event.
“William Ruto has said that some foreign teams will come to play at Talanta Stadium. How can a stadium that is costing Sh145 billion be paid for by Kenyans if the first game is played by foreigners? Don't we have teams in Kenya?” Gachagua asked.
His remarks have drawn attention to the participation of local football clubs in major events involving facilities built for the country.
Kenya has several football clubs, including Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, which attract large numbers of supporters. The national team, Harambee Stars, also represents the country in international competitions.
The planned opening match involving foreign teams is expected to provide an opportunity to showcase Kenya’s sporting facilities to an international audience.
Talanta Stadium is being developed as part of Kenya’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.
Gachagua’s comments have raised questions about how the government can promote international sporting events while also supporting local football clubs and players.
The debate comes as Kenya continues to prepare its infrastructure for the continental tournament, with expectations that the new stadium will support sports development and provide facilities for future competitions.
