Leverkusen head coach Carles Martínez has revealed that Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface is in contention to feature against Freiburg on Sunday at the BayArena, amid an injury crisis in the club’s forward line.
The Nigeria international has endured a difficult start to the campaign following his return from a loan spell at Werder Bremen, featuring in just one match against SV Elversberg.
Boniface came on as a second-half substitute in the opening match of the campaign, playing just five minutes as Leverkusen suffered a 3-2 away defeat.
The 25-year-old showed his frustration in the previous match against Mainz, storming into the dressing room after he was not introduced during the contest.
Despite the incident, Martínez has confirmed that Boniface is in contention to feature against Freiburg following injuries to Martin Terrier and Christian Kofane.
“We still have Patrik (Schick, ed.) and Boni (Victor Boniface, ed.) up front,” Martínez told journalists during his press conference.
“Besides, these days there are other ways to get by. We have a wide range of attacking players in the squad.”
The former Union Saint-Gilloise striker will hope to get the opportunity to feature in the contest and convince the manager of his qualities.
