Man Utd Could Lose Lisandro Martínez for Nothing, Then Spend £80m on His Replacement

Martínez's apology has eased uncertainty, but United must decide whether to extend his contract or pursue Branthwaite

Manchester United could consider Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite as a replacement for Lisandro Martínez, but an £80 million valuation and Martínez's possible contract extension complicate the decision

Manchester United could face an expensive defensive dilemma if Lisandro Martínez leaves Old Trafford without a transfer fee next summer, with Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite reportedly valued at £80 million.

The possibility comes after Martínez publicly criticised United's recruitment following Tuesday's 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid. Although the Argentina international apologised on Thursday, 15 October, uncertainty remains over his future and the club's plans for January.

A Potential £80m Replacement

Branthwaite, 24, has emerged as a possible target as United consider strengthening their central defence. The Everton player has attracted interest from Old Trafford before, with United unsuccessful in their attempts to sign him in 2024.

His reported £80 million valuation presents a significant obstacle. Everton extended his contract until 2030, giving the Merseyside club considerable leverage should United renew their pursuit.

There is no confirmed agreement between the clubs, and the reported figure is an asking valuation rather than an accepted transfer fee. A January deal would also depend on Everton's willingness to negotiate and United's available budget.

It would also put fresh scrutiny on the club's long-term planning, particularly how contract decisions and transfer spending are coordinated across successive windows. That creates the financial twist: United could potentially receive nothing for an established international defender while paying a substantial sum to recruit another left-footed centre-back.

Martínez's Apology Changes The Picture

Martínez's position became uncertain after he questioned the club's transfer strategy and singled out director of football Jason Wilcox following the defeat in Madrid.

His criticism raised questions about whether his relationship with United's leadership could be repaired, particularly with his existing contract approaching its final months.

However, the 28-year-old subsequently met manager Michael Carrick and senior club officials before issuing an apology on Instagram. He expressed regret over the timing and manner of his remarks and emphasised his commitment to the team's collective objectives.

United accepted the apology, although any internal disciplinary measures have not been publicly detailed. That development makes an immediate departure less certain than earlier speculation suggested.

Crucially, United have an option to extend Martínez's contract by another year, potentially keeping him until June 2028. Allowing him to depart for nothing in 2027 is therefore a possible outcome, not an inevitable one.

Why The Transfer Decision Matters

United's dilemma extends beyond replacing one defender. The club must balance defensive recruitment against the financial consequences of losing an existing player, particularly after another disappointing start to the season.

Branthwaite offers a younger, Premier League-tested option, but his long Everton contract means any approach could prove costly. United could instead retain Martínez, seek a lower-priced alternative or attempt to negotiate a sale before his current deal expires.

The timing matters too. January recruitment could provide Carrick with additional cover during the campaign, but moving early might require United to pay a premium for a player Everton have little reason to release.

For now, neither Martínez's exit nor Branthwaite's arrival is settled. What is clear is that United's next defensive decision could carry consequences far beyond the pitch.
