Jose Mourinho has warned Real Madrid not to lose focus after Kylian Mbappe scored twice, including an 87th-minute winner, to secure a 2-1 victory over Barcelona in Sunday's El Clasico.
Mbappe opened the scoring in the 41st minute before striking again late in a fiercely contested match at Camp Nou. The result was Madrid's fifth successive victory in all competitions.
Despite the significance of the win, Mourinho said defeating Barcelona was only part of Real Madrid's wider ambition as they attempt to win LaLiga.
Real Madrid remain third in the table with 24 points from 10 matches, three points behind leaders Barcelona, who have 27. Atletico Madrid are second on 25 points.
Mourinho praised his players' organisation, concentration and courage against a strong Barcelona side, but said the team must maintain the same standards in their upcoming fixtures.
The Portuguese coach wants his squad to move beyond the excitement of beating their biggest rivals and focus on building consistency over the coming weeks. He believes the victory has provided momentum, but cannot be treated as a defining achievement on its own.
Real Madrid had to change their goalkeeper before the match after first-choice Thibaut Courtois was ruled out with flu.
Andriy Lunin replaced him at Camp Nou, and Mourinho said he trusted the Ukrainian to deal with the pressure of such an important fixture. His pre-match message to Lunin was straightforward: be ready to play when called upon.
Mourinho also highlighted the importance of squad depth and having players prepared to contribute when regular starters are unavailable.
Captain Federico Valverde demonstrated that commitment after suffering an injury early in the match. According to Mourinho, the midfielder played for more than 40 minutes despite the problem because he wanted to help his team complete the job against Barcelona.
Mbappe's brace marked his 100th Real Madrid goal against FC Barcelona.
The 27-year-old joined the Spanish club on a free transfer in June 2024 after establishing himself as one of Europe's most prolific forwards. He scored 256 goals in 308 appearances for Paris Saint-Germain and 27 goals in 60 appearances for AS Monaco before beginning his career at Madrid.
The forward is now seeking major trophies to accompany his individual achievements, although his priority remains collective success as Real Madrid try to reclaim the LaLiga title.
His goals came one day before the 2026 Ballon d'Or ceremony, with Mbappe among the leading contenders for the award.
Barcelona continue to lead the 2026-27 LaLiga standings on 27 points from 10 matches, followed by Atletico Madrid on 25 and Real Madrid on 24. With three points separating the top three, the title race remains closely balanced.
For Mourinho, the message is clear: beating Barcelona matters, but winning LaLiga is the ultimate objective.
